Alright, I am at a complete loss here. I am hoping to God someone has had this experience because I am out of ideas.
I have a HP 840i DL DVD burner. Used it for countless DVDs that I rendered and burned from Pinnacle Studio. Everything was fine.
Now...I don't even know how to get into this....any DL DVD I put into the drive gets ruined.

Pinnale refuses to burn to it; Pinnacle will render and then say "writing to disc/compiling disc" and takes about a 1/100th of a second to do this and basically does nothing. However, the disc is now ruined. It will not play in the DVD player I have been using with the TV for months.
If I put a finished DVD in the drive as a test, it says it is a blank CD and that the drive is inaccesible. Further, thinking it was the drive I replaced it with a new 840i and then a new Sony DL burner. None of the units will recognize a completed DVD and on top of that, just by putting the DVD into any of the drives to try and open it, that DVD will now not play on my DVD player. Nevermind that one minute before it was a healthy, viewable DVD on the player.
What the heck is going on here?! Does anyone have any ideas. Please help as this is happening at a really horrible time and I am under the gun to get two projects burned. It doesn't look like it's Pinnacle because this happens when I try to use "Record Now" with a DL disc and I could swear that last time I tried this "Record Now" accepted DL DVDs for data discing. Also, if it was Studio, finished DVDs would play in the player regardless of whether Studio had ever touched it. Please help!!!
    Thank you.

Not sure how much of a help this is but i had the EXACT same problem a couple of years ago. Brand new media; relatively new burner (6wks max); not the same software but i dont think that that is the issue anyway and yet i had ALL of the problems you've just described. It turned out that the problem lay with a faulty laser on the drive. I took it back and installed another-same problems again. Now thinking it was highly likely a bad batch!

This time i returned it, got a refund and then swapped it for a Liteon. Worked perfectly.

I don't remember all the exact programs and steps, but check cdfreaks.com (forum), and there is an article on how to make DL dvd's. So far, Verbatim is the only recommended DL dvd's that work with any consistency, and very few softwares do the layer breaks correctly. I don't bother with DL yet, so I don't know the particulars, but the info is available at the site I recommended. Just search the forum...

I have to admit that I have been been staying away from DL DVD recordables as well. From stuff I've read it seems easy enough to do a DL DVD burn from a commercial DL DVD but when you are doing a project from scratch using your own authoring software ... look out!

I'm sure it can be done and done well but just too many issues.

    Thanks redwudz,
And I apologize for that. I'm so frustrated by all this I didn't even think as I wrote.

    Others:
The two HP drives I tried were not of the same batch as they were purchased some 6-7 months apart. I have reloaded Pinnacle Studio as a last resort. Last time I burned a movies I turned off my AVG protection and then all this happened. I don't know.

Perhaps you can tell us what you're up to.
You mention being under the gun... can you just put these projects on Single Layer DVDs using DVDShrink?

I had a bunch of videos that I was gonna try some DLs but ended up using DVDShrink.

    Love it.

Drastic I know but if I were you I would back up all your data and do a re-install of windows. I mean reformat/reinstall. Start fresh and clean. That should fix it assuming the problem is not a hardware issue.
