  1. first of all, i have read all the tutorials and searched the forum.

i am trying to convert a rmvb to divx but there are problems before that.

playing the rmvb in real player works but using mpc with real alternative gives a messed up picture and crashes when fast forwarded.

obvioulsy without playback capability, using avi synth and virtualdub crashes when encoding. the same goes for other programs like winavi, rm converter, etc.

    any ideas?
    thanks

I suspect that Real Alternative cannot cope with the way this has been encoded.

Does MPC crash during normal speed playback ?

Do you open the file in avisynth with AVISource or DirectShowSource ?

yes mpc, wmp , divx player plays the video, but it is messed up, both picture and sound. if i select different postions in the video, they all crash.

i have done neither. all i have tried is to load the avisynth file with virtualdubmod

    Let me rephrase

In your avisynth script, do you open the rm file with the AVISource statement, or the DirectShowSource statement ?

Most likely it's encoded with some new codec that RealAlternative can't handle yet. There are alternative methods such as real7ime and other tools, we may have to try those.
