Please someone help me. I have had really bad problems with my laptop Pioneer burner DVR-K14RA being unable to burn DVD's. It's a relatively recent development, but i've tried changing media both types tried are class 1 discs, i.e Sony (D11), and Verbatim (MCC 004). I've never had a problem with the Sony discs, but then it started turning them into coasters. I've only managed to burn 1 Verbatim disc, the first one I used. The drive burns CD's fine. I use DVD+R media as this seems to be the most compatible with my LG 4750 standalone player.

I'm trying to burn Lost S3 (4 per disc), and Weeds S2 (6 per disc) for friends. They are in DivX format. I've tried using the following programs to convert/burn the programs. I've tried burning straight to disc and also by trying to burn an image, to burn to disc.

    VSO DivXtoDVD
    Nero Vision 4
    NTI CD/DVD maker
    Power Producer Gold
    ImgBurn

They seem to work be burning fine, and then at the last minute are unable to write the TOC.

I've saved the Nero failure log. Can someone shed some light on the situation. Here's the log. It doesn't mean much to me:

  4. You need to replace the DVD burner. Pioneer drive/burner laser does not last very well.

    Thanks, I needed a laugh.

    Burn Weasel,

    You need a new burner.

Well, did you install/change anything prior to the problem. I have once experience something similar and I thought the drive is dead. Buy a new one and it plays OK. Put the old drive in another computer and it run OK. Seems like problem with driver (conflict?).

Before you buy a new drive, you might try cleaning this one.

    Thanks for your theories, but:

    a) How can the burner be dead if it can still burn CD's O.k?!

    b) Also, i'm not burning anything that has DRM or any kind of protection. It is all legitmiately downloaded DivX from US series that have aired on TV in the public domain in the States.

    c) I don't believe I have changed anything in my hardware (it's a laptop), or my software, though I run Norton Internet Security. Maybe I should have a go with it disabled?! I also do tend to update i-tunes to the latest version when it prompts me to, auto-run windows update regularly. In addition, if I uninstall some DVD software and leave others, i.e NTI CD/DVD maker, PowerProducer, will they delete files required by the programs left behind that use the burner?

    There are two lasers.

It is considered warez, because you did not buy the dvd's. The shows are available on dvd.

  10. had the same problem with my NEC 1300. used it for years, ripped/burned 1000's of CDs and DVDs. one day all aspects of it worked with the exception of burning DVDRs.

replaced the drive with NEC 3540. best $36 ever invested in my computering history.

BTW the 3540 is following the 1300's footsteps RE: reliability. it's just a lot faster!!

  11. Try burning a simple data DVD and test that. Burning a CD does not use the same components of the drive that burning a DVD does.

Burning a data DVD tests simple functionality and eliminates the complicating factor of the video conversion.

Cleaning also a good idea, very inexpensive and no risk if you are going to replace the drive, anyway.

  12. They used to advertised about twin lasers in the CD/DVD drive/burner. Two lasers are needed because CD and DVD uses different wavelength of laser light, to do thy bidding.

It becomes a norm that drive and burner have to support both CD and DVD. So they all comes with twin lasers. The laser that get use the most, will failed first.

Those new BD/DVD/CD burners much have three lasers.

    1) If it was legitimate you'd better believe it would have some type of protection to try and keep you from sharing with your friends.

    2) Using your logic I can download any movie I want as long as it was shown on TV somewhere at some time. You can't make up your own laws.

    Hi

Here's an update. I've tried burning a data DVD with the same files and it works fine. Burnt and verified. No problem whatsoever.

So could there be some codec issue? I'm using the latest version of FFDShow. Also have the Patin-Couffin engine installed as part of VSO's software, could there be a conflict?

Also, I don't want to get into a 'piracy' slanging match, let's just focus on the hardware issue please. Cheers.

Oh....crap, here's another update. I just tried burning another data disc and this time got the same error as before with not being able to create the TOC. Here's the error log, i noticed that the 'sense key' is 'illegal'. What the hell does that mean??:

yes we're really obligated to tell you that we don't approve of this here at videohelp. If we didn't then every 14 year old wanting to back up his playstation games would be on here and the site would be shut down in no time for advocating warez.

I believe it was already determined that your dvd burner is gone anyways. Maybe your friends will pitch in and buy you a new one after all the money you saved them burning pirated dvd's.

    WTF,

Bunch of hippocrites. This site is littered with hints/links to software that enables you to strip DVD's to copy, and ahem 'back up' discs. I'm not doing that!

How can I be stealing something that has already been aired on TV that you or I or anyone could record on to Tivo, VHS, or DVD at home legitimately and lend to a friend. I'm a fan of shows like Lost and Weeds. I'm in the U.K, and I can't wait the month or so for it to make it's way onto our TV stations. (These shows aren't on Pay per view channels over here, so it's free anyway I might add)

I'm not hiring a DVD or buying one from a shop and then de-crypting it, stripping it of Macrovision, etc. and then burning it and selling it. How is that stealing?

Haven't you ever recorded something from the TV to watch and view with your friends?

These are shows recorded off TV. The laws maybe different in the US, I don't know, but over here it's fair game to use a piece of equipment like a VCR to record your favourite show and watch it.

I'm not advocating piracy, promoting it or whatever you seem to think...You lot seem far too paranoid. Afraid of the site getting shut down?

We are copying discs that we own. That is the difference :P

Downloading divx rips of tv shows that you can buy on dvd is piracy.

Not strictly true. Lost Series 3 has yet to be aired on TV in the UK so you should not have access to it. In much the same way as the Region Coding system on DVDs was introduced to prevent a DVD that was released in the US as Region 1 could not, in theory, be seen by anyone in Europe (Region 2) before it was officially released there. Although not strictly Pay per View, the latest series of Lost has been bought by the robbing b*stards at Sky so is only available to Sky and Cable subscribers and consequently will not be available on any free to air service.

Yes, everyone throughout the world has recorded programmes from off air TV and watched them later, either alone or with a bunch of friends. When video recorders were first available there was considerable discussion over the legallity of being able to do this. It became generally accepted that to use a VCR to 'time shift' a programme was perfectly acceptable (even if technically illegal). To go any further was definitely not. Our laws are much the same as in the US. To record a TV programme that you are entitled to watch for viewing at a later time is perfectly legal. To then make copies and supply, whether free of charge or for payment, to upload it to the web or to supply to another in whatever format, is illegal. To download that illegally uploaded video is also illegal and to then burn it to DVD for onward supply to others is illegal. I suggest you make a few extra copies and try to sell them in your local pub or car boot sale and you will very quickly find out just how illegal it is (Summary offence carrying a Level 5 (up to 6 months custodial sentence and/or £5,000 fine) penalty).

However, ignoring for a moment what you are trying to burn, back to the original question. As has already been pointed out, your burner has 2 lasers of differing wavelengths. One for burning CDs and another for burning DVDs. Your DVD laser is dying, buy a new burner.

  21. Here is a simple answer on the legal question.

If I help you fix your car, no problem.

If you tell me you need the car fixed so you can run over your ex-wife, and I do it, I get to join you in prison. I may not be certain you are actually going to do the illegal act, but if there is any question whatsoever, the safe thing to do is not help you to perform the act.

As is stated in the FAQ, specific filenames are NOT necessary. They just cloud the issue with potential legal problems. We are not even supposed to discuss Macrovision anymore, this site has been contacted by lawyers from the opposition.

As to the writer, it seems to be toast. Cleaning the only thing you can realistically do. DVD burners are under $40.00 now.

    Burn Weasel,

The "KEY_ILLEGAL_REQUEST" error you saw in both logs you posted just means that the burning software sent a command to the drive that was malformed or "illegal". It was almost certainly caused by the drive not supporting a feature the software was trying to use. The software would then use another series of commands to accomplish the same task. The "KEY_ILLEGAL_REQUEST" error sounds much worse than it is, and it's very unlikely to be the cause of your problem.

The reason your drive is producing coasters is the "KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR" (atapi error code 035700) instances in the logs. After the burn was completed, the drive tries to read the table of contents (TOC) from the burned disk, but was unable to (in both logs). Since the drive thought it had successfully written it, but can't read it now, the source of the problem is either the drive or the media. The two logs only show the MCC004 being used, but it is good media and you say the Sony media didn't work either, so that just leaves the drive as the source of the problem.

You could replace the drive, but given that it's in a laptop, I'd like to second BJ_M's suggestion to get a external USB drive. It's a good solution to your current problem, and can be used on any future computer with a minimum of hassle.
