    Hi all.

I've always burn my DVDs (movie and data) with no problems. Even with crappy brands I get no error.

The writer is an internal one in my ACER laptop. Max speed is only 8x.

Recently I can't burn any DVDs. For DVD movies, I've always used their DVD-Video template.

Here's an error message from NERO:

I would first try a different media. If you are already using a quality media (Verbatim or Taio Yuden), then it's also possible your drive has simply failed. Notebook drives don't have near the lifespan of a standard PC drive.

I saw three problems in your log.

    The first was:
    CdRomPeripheral : PIONEER DVD-RW DVRKD08RS atapi Port 0 ID 0 DMA: Off

That tells me the drive is operating in PIO mode. Very slow and very CPU intensive. Try this:

To check DMA/PIO mode within Windows:

    Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager>IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.

From there, right click on one of the channels and choose 'Properties>Advanced Settings'. All drives should be DMA mode. The 'Current Transfer Mode' for Hard drives is usually DMA 4-6 and DVD burners DMA 2-4, DVD ROMs usually DMA 2. If you see any in PIO mode, that can slow things down.

Changing them back may be easy or complicated. First see if you can change them in that window. If not, I usually uninstall the channel the drive is on and let the OS reinstall it. This will usually take a reboot. This will not damage any files on the computer.
The next error may be related to the first:

    CdRom0: SCSIStatus(x02) WinError(0) NeroError(-1066)
    CDB Data: 0xAC 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 64 00 00
    Sense Key: 0x05 (KEY_ILLEGAL_REQUEST)
That's usually a communication error from the software/hard drive to the burner.

    The last was:

    Disc Manufacturer ID:
The disc is unidentified. For that, I would try another brand of disc, as Krispy Kritter mentioned.

And if you are just burning DVD discs, I wouldn't use Nero. ImgBurn works much better and is free. I don't have Nero on any of my systems anymore.

    Hi redwudz.

My OS is Windows XP 5.1 SP2.

Under the Disk Drive>Properties (in Device Mgr), I can't see an Advance Settings.
I see 5 tabs: General, Policies, Volumes, Driver, Details.

The Same with my DVDWriter drive, I can't see an Advance Settings.
I see 6 tabs: General, Policies, Volumes, Driver, Details, Region.

I can't see any DMA / PIO related settings.

I do want to burn Data DVDs too e.g. MP3 / video collection.

Currently I can play DVD movies & Data DVDs (those I previously burnt when all was OK) perfectly.

I even tried enabling "Simulation" in Nero with and without the Burning but in both cases Simulation just failed. I get a "Invalid Block Address" message in the status window.

I noticed that when trying to burn in Nero, the Burn tab got "Verify written data" disabled so I can't tick it.

I tried Nero DriveSpeed but I get a "No CD-ROM found" message.

I bought this laptop around Dec 2008. I can't take my laptop back to the shop I bought it for repair/check up because it's in a different town & far from me.

IS there a way I can check if my writer/the laser thingy in it is physically ok? Maybe with another software.
Device Mgr says "This device is working properly". I want another opinion.

This is the log message when I tried to burn a data DVD :

rock_king_my, there are a few motherboards out there that don't use the PIO/DMA settings setup in Device Manager. I think maybe Asus is one of them. Unknown what ACER uses. But if your burner is PIO mode, you have a problem. The symptoms will be very slow burning/reading and a lot of CPU usage during the burn as shown in Task Manager. If you don't have those problems, then maybe it's something else. I would definitely try ImgBurn and try a different brand of DVD media. The one you are using may not be compatible with your burner.

    Hi.

I tried IMGBURN for data DVD, yes it work but it took about 55mins to burn a full disc. Is this normal?

And how do I burn a DVD movie file (VIDEO_TS folder)? I got POWERISO too.

If it took 55 minutes to burn a disc then it is definitely using pio mode.

I have no idea about Visual Basics~!

But I can say that I can see "Advanced Settings" when looking at ATA/ATAPI Controllers but no "Advanced Settings" tab for my DVDWriter.

So if IMGBURN works now but NERO doesn't work (anymore like it used to), what gone wrong with my laptop/writer?

    What's "Invaild Block Address" mean?

I read elsewhere that NERO 9 is trouble & we should downgrade back to NERO 7 or 8, is this true???

All you need to do is save that quoted text to a file "resetdma.vbs" and double click it.

Here it is already done for you.
    Download and unzip this file.

    resetdma.zip

    Double click resetdma.vbs
    That's it.
