dvd rippers/convertors/compression

I transferred a VHS tape toa DVD and its a Video -ts file now
26 mins long, so its big...I want to convert that to AVI with a view
to getting in a Fla and a swf format for the web etc.
im not sure what ripping or rippers are about and whats right in
that area..

And am totally new to this..is their a convertor an compressor that produces a
small AVi or flash file size that can then import into flash etc.

help /directions appreciated.

I located and downloaded the AVS convertor and it dida terrific job.
now i just need to work out how to make the shows work on the site etc.
i can recommend that program since the quality of pictrue and stability is high
and color integrity throughout didn't vary.
