I recently bought 50 Sony DVD+R and 25 Maxell DVD+RW. These were the correct speed and format my Matsui DVD recorder claims to be compatible with. Now correct me if I'm wrong, Sony and Maxell would claim to be, and probably are, one of the more popular brands of DVD media.
Whilst I admit Matsui is at the cheaper end of the market, one would hope and expect the more popular brands to work on any DVD recorder, no matter how cheap. It doesn't even attempt to format the discs, before ejecting them. The cheaper Verbatim/Datawrite discs seem to work fine, but I'm not in a position to be able to get hold of them easily.

The cheapy recorders often use older burners, which explains a problem with newer media.
