Hi everyone,
i have an avi file encoded with xvid and ac3 codecs. am trying to convert it to dvd(pal) video using the famous tmpgenc tool. my problem is that whenever i try to do this the tmpgenc tool sometimes gives as output a single .mpg file and other times 2 file .m2v and a .wav(which is the correct one). i have no control over what type of output it is going to give. can someone tell me whats happening over here and how to take control of output type?
Thanks

Normally you setup Tmpgenc to output System (Video+Audio). It sounds like you are sometimes selecting Elementary Streams ES(Video+Audio).
As for settings in Tmpgenc it is easier to just load a template, like the DVD template, then edit it to your liking.
Good luck. -
Assuming a DVD is your final product, just an observation. If your Xvid AC3 audio is PAL DVD compliant, why convert it? Just encode the Xvid video separately and add the AC3 audio afterwards when you author the files to DVD format. AC3 is much more compact than WAV audio and you won't have the conversion losses if you use TMPGEnc encoder and convert it to WAV or MPEG-1, Layer 2 audio. The audio would need to be 48kHz to be DVD compliant, and authoring programs like TMPGEnc DVD Author can add separate audio in during the authoring process.

by templates i suppose u mean the Project Wizard..right? yes am using that only...the DVD(PAL) option. but even then am getting the same problem. sometimes .mpg output and other times .m2v and .wav ouput. this thing is driving me crazy! i mean how could it randomly choose the ouput when every time am doing the same settings. i encoded a full movie to dvd in 6 hrs to find only that its a single .mpg file which cant be burned by using nero as it needs to be authored 1st thru ifoedit or something like that.

actually i don't know much about all this stuff so idon't know whenther it is PAL compliant or not...help pls.

The PAL video part is easy enough. PAL is only 25fps video and NTSC is 29.97fps or 23.976fps video. NTSC and PAL have different framesizes also. See 'WHAT IS' DVD to the upper left for the different formats. <<<<<<
You can check the framerate of any video, and see other aspects of the video with Gspot 2.60 or AVICodec or similar programs.
I don't know why TMPGEnc encoder would change your settings.
Any video that you convert to MPEG format and want to make into a DVD will have to be authored. Nero is not a very good authoring tool. You could try the freeware GUI for dvdauthor or the payware TMPGEnc DVD Author program. TDA is one of the easiest to use. The output can be burned to DVD disc with Nero or TDA.

ah oh..ya i knew that...terminology probs. lol...but thanks
but i think it 1st needs to be converted to dvd format for my dvd standalone to play it smoothly...actually am converting it in this format so as to tap the most of my avi file coz dvd's res. is much more higher than VCD or SVCD..btw i just set the settings in tmpgenc to ES(Video+Audio) and then used it to convert and now things r going normal. a .m2v file and a .mp2 file. if it works successfully i'll keep u all updated.
