Hey guys, This is a simple question for someone who is into this kind of thing and it would save me alot of money if you could help me out.

I was wondering what is the best dvd player that plays AVI encoded with DivX and XviD. I am thinking about buying the "Philips DVP5960 DVD Player" but I would like to confirm that it is one of the best.

This is the one I am looking at:

I'll only play NTSC btw and I do not own an HDTV.

Having just done the same searches, I can confirm that the Philips is a cracking machine, even though I bought the LG...
I only came down on the side of the LG as there seemed some area's where the Philips would stutter on some mp4 files (which my current machine also does, so there'd have been no gain for me). But this seems to be only when plays from the usb.

There's a thread below on the two of them. I'm very happy with the LG, I've had no problems with is so far (there was a slight niggle with the rgb output going green when the ntsc hack was applied, but I've fixed that).

I don't think you'd be sorry if you got the Philips (or even the LG !! )

buy it from Costco if you have a membership. They have a very good return policy

  4. I will consider Toshiba if DVP5960 do not support other languages for external subtitle. Toshiba can support all languages and unicode

  5. If your TV accepts HDMI, consider an Oppo. Plays almost everything, with exceptional picture quality. http://www.oppodigital.com/opdv971h.html
