I have a question about copying DVDs recorded with a desk-top DVD recorder. I had been using MTR to extract the files but ran into an error when extracting from a PAL DVD that someone sent me. (Most of what I'm working with are NTSC). I was told on the ripDifferent forum that MTR is set up to deal with commercial DVDs (although I didn't have any problems with it ripping DVD-R until I tried the PAL DVD+R).

If I use Toast's copy function, does it change/compress the files in any way or is it doing a straight copy? Also, if the DVD-R had data, I would just drag and drop the files into a folder, can I do the same with the VIDEO_TS folder or will that cause some kind of problems? Finally, in some cases, I want to re-set the region from Region 1 to Region 0. Obviously MTR allows that to happen. Is there another way to do this if I'm not using MTR? Thanks.

Maybe YadeX (1,2) isn't so obsolete yet. (Guide)

Straight copy (unless you have the "Fit-to-DVD video compression" format option checked).

If the disc has no copy protection, a Finder copy will be fine.

Desktop DVD recorders don't burn with regions. Neither does Toast. To make identical copies with Toast just use the Copy window. Or you could use the DVD video from VIDEO_TS option in the Toast Video window if you've already copied the VIDEO_TS folder to the hard drive. There is no re-encoding.

Toast 7 can change PAL to NTSC (or the other way around). In that case you use DVD video as the setting in the Video window, select the video from the DVD using the Media Browser and drag it to the Video Window. When you click the burn button Toast will ask if you want it to be NTSC (assuming you have NTSC selected in Toast Preferences). This, naturally, requires re-encoding.
