Philips 5960 GARBLES filenames on dvd data discs

5960 is garbleing filenames that the 642 displays properly.

the wierd 5960 filenames are also out of order.
eg: TH2F4D~1 is NOT the.4440.S0 1

this particular disk is a TDK dvd burned as ISO/UDF with Padus Diskjuggler

I have nowtried about a dozen dvds of various divx tv series..all have same problem..
only a couple very old ones (made with Roxio , i believe) show non-garbeled filenames.
But even in that case, the sort order seems to be baesd upon the non-diferentated truncated name displayed, not full name. in other words, files are played OUT OF ORDER.

NEXT usually goes back to 1st one.

Use 8.3 filenames with only UPPER CASE text and underscores only (no spaces, hyphens, commas, etc). Start your filenames with episode numbers to force them to sort in the right order:

01_ETC.AVI
02_ETC.AVI
03_ETC.AVI.

I had sorting issues with the 642 also if I didn't name my files in this way (although I use spaces and not underscores).

Also, the 642 does not support long file names...it uses 8.3. If they are over 8 characters, it only shows part of the name.

They work on 642

The 642 does not use the 8.3 short filenames that the 5960 apparently does. It displays as much of the filename as will fit on the screen and chops the rest. That isn't true 8.3 notation. The 8.3 tilde-number naming system has been a pain since the beginning of FAT32. I'm just surprised if there isn't an option in the 5960 to disable the 8.3 convention and just show as much of the filename as possible. If there is no such option, Philips took a real step backwards in that respect.

the 5960 simply cannot properly read directories on UDF discs.

It has everything to do with ISO 9660 level 1 ISO 8.3 conventions and the way non-conforming filenames are munged.

Maybe it's just me, but I had to read this post a dozen times before I could figure out what your little "chart" was trying to display.

Also, regardless of how the 5960 is screwing up the names, if you named the files as indicated above, they would be in order.

that was one example out of more than 100 dvds burned by Diskjuggler (default UDF with ISO layer) over the last 2-3 years. Some are burned with short filenames such as s01e02.avi

642 displays these properly as well.

5960 displays random filenames

5960 is limited to old ISO9660 format,which UDF replaced.
5960 is limited to USB 1.1 and does not power usb device (i hear)
5960 remote and front panels controls are clunky
makes one think...

did they pull out old designs/code to get a divx ultra / hdmi player out quickly out

everything about the 5960 is more primitive than the 642 except the decoding..
i need to keep BOTH plugged in.

sorry.... obviously you dont own either a 642 or a 5960

The 5960 displays the first 14 characters of the filename on an ISO/Joiliet burned DVD.
Its garbles the filenames on a UDF/ISO dvd.

The 642 displays 11 characters plus a sequence number on both ISO/Joliet and UDF dvds, without garbleing.
