Try the WinAVI support - as it's acommercial application, you should be entitled to some kind of support. There may also be some update available. Not many here use WinAVI as it's generally considered Quote: Monkes crap End Quote, but maybe someone?

My first guess is that K-Lite Mega Codec Pack has caused some damage, which is fairly common. That's one reason we never recommend installing those sort of codec packs.

But you can probably replace msvcrt.dll and see if that helps. It's located in the System 32 folder inside the Windows OS folder. WinAVI suggests installing that codec pack to fix that problem, which I find humorous. WinAVI is not popular around here, either.

    One place for msvcrt.dll: http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?msvcrt

You might consider dumping K-lite and just installing the codecs you need and use instead of K-lites 'shotgun' approach of installing everything, and it's use of problematic codecs that can overwrite and corrupt your existing codecs and other parts of the OS.

EDIT: mats.hogberg, WinAVI support now refers their purchasers back to us for support of their 'product'.

    1. First use a program like Gspot 2.60 on a unknown video or one that won't play. Gspot will tell you what codec is needed, then only install that one. You can go to our 'Tools' page and then to 'Codecs' and you should see most every one you would need, including Xvid.

For Quicktime and Real Media, try Quicktime Alternative and Real Alternative. They will install those two codecs along with Media Player Classic, a good universal player. And you won't have the 'nag' screens that Real One or Quicktime keep putting up. You might also DL a copy of VLC Media player. It plays most any format using it's own codecs, so you don't really need to install most codecs. Even some codecs from K-lite can be used, but just install the ones you need, not the whole pack. But I would only do that if you couldn't find that particular codec anywhere else, because there are problem ones in there, as you found out.

    2. One of the best alternatives to WinAVI is ConvertXToDVD. Even the older freeware version, DivxToDVD works better than WinAVI, IMO. Another program that handles a lot of formats is the freeware encoder SUPER. You won't have to search much on this forum to see lots of posts for 'WinAVI problems'.

EDIT: You can find Quicktime Alternative and Real Alternative on the net or here:

    http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Real_Alternative.htm

    http://www.free-codecs.com/download/QuickTime_Alternative.htm

They will both install to the same player.
