Have been using the latest version of winavi for a few weeks now and suddenly I start to get this message just before it starts to convert. Why ? Don't know what I could have done to cause this ? the actual message reads: "access violation at address 00000000. read of address 00000000. Please help. Thanks.

First contact should be to WinAVI support. You paid for it, and you deserve to get some. That said, I have never heard of anyone actually getting support from WinAVI support.

The only fix I know of for WinAVI problems is to uninstall it, and to use a good quality program instead.

  3. Frankly, sloppy programming.

Such an error almost always arises because the program tried to load some other thing (like a codec) but for some reason it failed. When it fails, the OS returns a value of zero. At this point, any self-respecting program will check to see if zero was returned. If so, it should not then go on to try to use the (non-existent) object, otherwise the program will crash.

You can try to find out what it was trying to create by looking in detail at the dump that Windows generates when an application crashes. If it should turn out that the crash itself isn't in winavi.exe (I assume that's its name), then winavi can be forgiven and you need to focus on the module (e.g., something with a name .dll etc) causing the crash.

So, most likely a combination of incorrect behavior by something like a codec and, possibly, winavi's poor handling of it.

  4. 'Sup crew,

Just wanted to post something i stumbled on accidently. I install winavi in fresh install, everything works great, I install Adobes CS4 and suddenly winavi goes to heck, crashes constantly, i got diver.dll errors, i got dr. watson pitching fits, but i don't put 2 + 2 together until i update my codec pack months later. First uninstall the old codec pack and i get over a dozen warnings from my xp system that Adobes CS4 install has broken the associated codecs (including half a dozen from ZJ media)- do i want to remove these entries from the registry?

    ???

Uh...yeah. Thinking i am on to something here i also uninstall winavi, and reboot.

Install updated codec pack, reinstall winavi, and spank me if everything is not working perfectly again.

Now i'm thinking, lots of us use Adobe, and are not aware of this nasty little habit CS4 has of breaking our system codecs when it installs.

It's an easy fix as you can all see, so i hope this helps...

gravedigging a 3 year old post to blather? cs4 isn't the problem, it's the useless codec packs.

Come on aedipuss, it was good to read again the very-instructive comment by JohnnyMalaria.

BTW, thanks a lot for that, Mr. Miller.
