    Hello,
It used to be that a firewire attached DVD burner could not play back movies, it would only read data DVD's. I think it had something to do with licensing.

Have they fixed that yet? I want to get an external firewire DVD burner and I'm hoping it will play back movies. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

    Thanks!

Yes. The limitation I think you are refering to was iDVD burning to an external drive - you can do it now though in iLife '06 (in '05 there was a hack to enable it).

If the Mac has a built-in combo or superdrive then there is no problem playing movies from an external drive. I don't know if it works that way with older Macs that have only a CD drive.
