  1. The Philips DVP 5960 looks almost perfect but won't play back non-dvd resolution files from the looks of the comments on this site, can anyone suggest an alternative?

No Philips DVD player supports HD Divx/Xvid.

Note that the much beloved Oppo does NOT make a player that supports HD Divx, but you have to read their web page very carefully to understand this. I wouldn't be surprised if some mistakenly think that they do support HD Divx, but they don't.

The Helios X5000, while very expensive, seems to do a very good job of this, but I'm having problems finding someone who actually owns one so I can ask questions about it.

Reviews on the I-O Data player are very mixed and they appear to have poor support and constand firmware issues.

What about the Momitsu DVD-V888N? The description at HKFlix indicate "It now supports 1080p upconversion, true 1080 playback of media files, USB 2.0 support, upgraded hardware, and a video input so you can use the device to upconvert other video sources." And the specs on the Momitsu site show support of:
    Support Video Format MPEG1, MPEG2 , MPEG4(AVI), MP4 HD, WMV9, JPEG, BMP, PNG, TIFF, JPEG2000, GIF

Anyone have this player yet??? Very interested to see if it will play 720p avi files since it lists MP4 HD as supported. Since it has a USB 2.0 connection, I'm thinking it should play files from a hard drive, and I would suspect also from a disc.

If you don't see the Sigma EM8620L chipset (or similar) in the specs or prices > $200 expect that the player is limited to SD. Even if the player does have a high end chipset, never assume it will play a specific format. Do your homework before you buy.

  7. Wait a minute! My Philips DVD Recorder does play back HD-res DivX. That was one of the first tests I did with it. Sorry, I can't think of the model number, but it is likely one of these:

Hence the reason for the post. It's not clear that the player will play HD files, but that seems to be the case from the little bit of info ava on this player. HK Flix states the V888N, ". . . can support 1920x1080 file playback (vs 720x480). . ." That would seem to be HD avi files. It has a Sigma chipset, but the specific chip in the player is not listed. And it lists for $449 FWIW.

Someone on avsforum bought the player but hasn't posted a review yet. I'm hoping to get some info here. As it only started shipping this month, I wonder if the divx site is up-to-date. But Momitsu does not say the player is divx certified.

All you can do is search the current material, talk to the manufacturer and wait for somebody you trust to test and review the box. All these "red laser" solutions are ad hoc without standards. What you see in test results is what you get. That assumes no production changes.
