I'm trying to decide on which one to get. What I really care about the most is Xvid playback though. I have a lot of Xvid videos on my computer, most of which are recently encoded with the latest version of Xvid. I want to save some money, so can the DVP642 handle just about any Xvid file that the DVP5960 can?

Get the Philips DVP-5140 at WALMART for $49 and change (in US Dollars).

The Philips DVP-5140 is the little brother of the Philips DVP-5960

The two are very nearly similar in terms of quality and compatibility when it comes to MPEG-4 and DVD playback.

The main difference is that the DVP-5960 has HDTV up-conversion via a HDMI output. The DVP-5960 also has a USB 1.1 input.

Otherwise the DVP-5140 and DVP-5960 are identical and both are MUCH better at playing XviD MPEG-4 files than the Philips DVP-642.

In fact the Philips DVP-642 is garbage that should be avoided. I had one once and I absolutely hated the quality ... to top it off the damn thing broke on me after a month or two of use (and it was not even used "heavily" during that period of time).

I now have a Philips DVP-5140 (which I bought at WALMART) and I am very happy with the quality of the output.

Plus the DVP-5140/DVP-5960 handle XviD MPEG-4 files MUCH better than the Philips DVP-642

    P.S.
Here is a WALMART link for you ---> CLICK HERE

If you don't like WALMART here is an AMAZON.COM link ---> CLICK HERE

AMAZON.COM is not as cheap as WALMART but consider that the AMAZON.COM price includes the shipping as the shipping is "free". I don't think WALMART offers free shipping but then again if you are in the USA there should be a retail WALMART near you.
