Failures are usually caused by junk media. As far as DL media goes, the only good brand out there is Verbatim. With single-layer media, Verbatim or anything made in Japan is the rule. Failing that, it could also be the sign of a bad drive; my LG quit burning DLs after a dozen successful burns. It still burns SLs fine.

If you are using Recode I'm not sure why you would burn in DL anyway since Recode is mainly for compressing DVD-9 into a DVD-5. If you want to retain full quality and/or features, I recommend ripping with DD to an ISO file (or DVDFab Decrypter, if necessary) and burning with IMGBurn. If you really do want to compress, set your Target in Recode's main screen where you import files to DVD-5. You may want to elminate any extras or foreign-language soundtracks so you don't have to compress too much.

    bhupinder_c23,

Just in case you would still rather use dual layer, making one change in your process might put an end to your coaster problems. Nero puts the layer break wherever it wants, which isn't a very good idea. If you change to using a freeware program called ImgBurn to do the burning, it will allow you to choose where to put the layer break. Click Here for a good guide to using ImgBurn for dual layer.

One other potential problem might be the kind of disks you're using. Verbatim +R DL disks work for (almost) everyone, and no one can get consistently good results with anything else.

To get a dual layer dvd to fit on a single layer, you transcode (or "shrink") the material to a smaller size. Many people here use a freeware program called DvdShrink to do that. Click Here for a guide on how to transcode with DvdShrink.

If you run into a problem, or have any questions, just post back here. I'll check this thread periodically. Welcome to VideoHelp.

As the man with the strange diet pointed out, Verbatim are the only reliable DL media, and the PGCEdit/Imgburn is one of the more reliable methods for burning. I would not be allowing Nero to burn to DL if you want something playable.

bhupinder_c23 - The problem is that you are not correctly describing your problem. You used the term "two layers" which is meaningless when talking about a single layer disc, so of course everyone thought you had the infamous "Nero dual layer" problem. You are going to have to explain better exactly what you mean before we can help you. Please avoid talking about "layers" (plural) when talking about burning to a single layer disc. Tell us more too about exactly what you are encoding with Nero. Are you encoding VCDs or AVI files that are in multiple parts?

  7. i copied the dvd movie using dvd decryptor, then using nero recode,i removed the extras and compressed the movie to fit in a dvd-5 disc .then i selected 'burn to hard disk folder' option and started burning.after burning half the disc nero indicated that it is burning a layer two.after the completion ,i used ulead dvd movie factory 5 and bumt the hard disk folder to a 'moserbaer dvd-r 4.7gb/16x ' disc.the burning completed succesfully.it looks as if the disc is burnt only to the half.but the full movie is on the disc, occupying 4.7gb.i'm having trouble playing second half of the movie only.

If you described your troubles accurately, your drive THINKS there is a Double-layer disc when in fact you have a single-layer disc in there. I suggest changing the media. MBI isn't good media anyway. Read my previous post about what media to use - that's the cause of the vast majority of DVD-related problems.

Also, did you set Recode to a target of DVD-5? If not, then it's not compressing enough to fit on a DVD-5. Bear in mind that compression generally means a loss of quality.

Do not get Ulead involved in this. Recode should burn the DVD or you should be able to burn straight to a hard disk folder, so you play the movie off your hard drive and see if it works and if the quality is acceptable. THEN if it passes muster, you can burn to a DVD-5 from Nero Burning Rom by selecting the DVD-Video template type at startup.
