I have used ffmpegx for a year or so and it has always done the job. Today I tried to use it to convert a .wmv to .mov for use in a Flash movie. When I launched ffmpegx it made me locate the binaries and click install. If I close the program and relaunch it asks for it all over again, every time. I downloaded a fresh install and trashed the old one. Still the same thing.
Once I locate the binaries and install the program seems to be working. So I selected the .wmv and choose to convert to .mov. No converted file was created, even after several tries. I tried some diffent formats like .flv and .dv. It created the conversions to those formats. So I tried importing them into my Flash movie and it said it was an unrecognized file type. I tried playing the .dv in Quicktime player and it also said it was an unrecognized file type.
What might I try to correct this problem? I will add that the last time it worked for me was before I upgraded to Mac OS 10.4.
I noticed a two year old post about a new version (total re-write). Is that still in the works. Sounds good.
