I have an ATI Tv wonder card. No matter which software I use I cannot capture with a vertical resolution of more than 240. I can do 640x240, 720x240, anthing x 240, but nothing with 480 as the vertical resolution. Doesn't matter which program I use, Virtual Dub, MMC 7,1, etc.
Is this a limitation with my hardware? I'm trying to capture laserdiscs onto a vcd or svcd and 240 resolution makes everything crappy looking.
Thanks for any and all help.

you're using directshow capture drivers. they're optimized for that vertical size for some ridiculous reason. instead of AVI, try doing a real high bitrate I-frame only MPEG-1 capture (this is basically like MJPEG) and use that as a source.
but if you install the WDM->VFW wrapper to use virtualdub, i do think you should be able to get custom resolutions in that. however, that might be only with the AiW, not the TV Wonder.
you can also try to get an older set of native VFW drivers. ATI may have them under the support.ati.com site as 'previous supported vfw drivers' or something -
Thanks. Does the wrapper come with virtualdub or do I have to download it somewhere else?
I've tried mpgeg 1 and 2 codecs and it still won't let me go any higher than 240. Maybe I should give in and buy an AIW.

Is your OS is Win2000?
With Win200, you could not capture with vertical size more 240. Try Win98. I could get 480x480 with few dropped frames using PICvideo.

in win98, i think you can get it by installing webTV and then uninstalling it. it comes with lots of webcam software (how i got it) and it can be installed directly, but i don't remember all the files you need. search the forums, i know it's been posted a couple times. i think the direct way works even in 2k, but i'm now sure the other methods will.
the AIW 16Mb PCI is only about $99 at best buy now. if you're on 98/ME you might want to try the cybermailAV card from http://www.compgeeks.com . you can only get it now with a little camera (i'll tell you how the quality of that is next week when i get it) for $30. the card's pretty good though, i have one of those already, and wanted another one for the other computer. there's a whole thread out there with about 50 posts on the card (started by 'H@mouse' i think).

I'm using Win2000. I'll try taking the card out and putting it in my kids computer. He has win98se on it.
Thanks guys for all the help. -
I have a TV Wonder also and the vertical limit of 240 sucks!
At least with Virtual Dub I used to be able to capture at
any res with any codec it seemed now I'm stuck with the parameters of the TV card with the 7.1 mm.If there is ever
any solution with this(direct show)thing or whatever someone
let us know.I just don't know whether to put the old drivers
back in or not? -
I have the same limitation in win2k - xxx*240 only with TV wonder. Yes if you go to win9x you will get higher resolutions but at a cost of much CPU useage over win2k.
In win2k I installed the demo of powerVCR III 2.0
this allowed me to capture @ higher resolutions under win2k but the program so far has not been good, lots of limitations for codec & resolutions.
