  1. I was backing up my new set of Voltron DVDs and decided to test if Xvid was better than Divx. The reason for this is that I've noticed that most of the anime on the web is encoded with Xvid rather than Divx and even though the bitrate is lower, the quality seems much better. I used VDub to make several one minute clips using the 2-Pass method to make 480 X 480 avis(also did 704 X 480). The clips encoded with Xvid at a bit rate of 1200 were much better than with Dvix at a rate of 1800, patricularly in darker areas. How is it that Xvid can use a bitrate 1/3 smaller and still get better results?

That probably depends on the version of both codecs. Xvid is used more commonly because it doesn't have license fees that it charges. Xvid is built from a Divx core. But a fair amount of people like it better than Divx. I can't explain the differences, but the bottom line is, if it works better for you, use it.

We have a few members that are much more knowledgeable about both codec versions and may be able to fill in a little more information.

  3. I'm using the Divx 6.2.5 and Xvid 1.0.1 codecs right now. What amazes me is that the Xvid looks so much better at 2/3 of the bitrate of Divx. I thought they would be more similar in results.
