  1. I am trying to convert a Divx file that uses AC3 audio to DVD. I tried using Toast to convert the video and burn a DVD but the resulting DVD did not have any sound. What do I have to do in order to get sound?

    Thanks

  2. For AC3 to work, you must install free codec A52Codec 1.7.2
Then, I guess you should convert audio to a format supported by Toast.

    How to proceed:
You should install SimpleMovieX or QuickTime Pro.
Separate Audio Track (With SimpleMovieX, just do Edit>Separate Tracks)
2 documents will open: Video only and Audio only.
Save the Audio one as .mov file, then drop it in iTunes. This will convert it into MP3 format if you have selected MP3 as default encoder in iTunes preferences.
Retrieve the MP3 file, open it with SimpleMovieX, do select all, copy.
Then go to your Video only document, put the playhead at 0, do Edit>Add.
Then finally save your file as .mov or .avi format. You have replaced AC3 audio by MP3 audio, which should work as expected with Toast.

Note that I'm the developer of this little app.

With the A52Codec for QuickTime installed, Toast should be able to handle the DivX to DVD conversion as-is, as Toast decodes the source movie using QuickTime anyway. I never had to transcode the audio separately to mp3 for this kind of encoding.

  4. After installing the A52Codec for Quicktime it worked fine just using Toast. But now I have noticed another issue. The original video is 1280 x 720 and does not display correctly on my TV, the image loses the outer perimeter. Skould I change the resolution and if so how? This is my first mac and I'm pretty clueless as to what software to use for most video editing tasks. I'm a long time PC user and just recently switched over.

Sounds like overscan. It happens to everything you watch on tv. If it's a few percent, don't worry about it; the filmmakers (should) have taken that into account. If it's 10% or more, (let someone) adjust your tv.

You could put a black border around it before encoding, but that's a lot of work for a few percent that you're only 'missing' because you've seen the full frame.
