I'm in the process of authoring a DVD via Nero Vision 4. I've navigated my way through the entire process but I get problems during the transcoding process. It will literally just sit there and not do anything. At first I thought I needed to give it time. 13 hours later and with still no progress I had to force the program to shut down.

I've tried searching through this forum for similar problems and it seems other people have had codec issues. In my case all my codecs are completely up to date. I've used GSpot and it all checks out. The movie plays perfectly in VLC.

Can anyone suggest any ways to get the transcoding going on this one?

Use something else would be my best suggestion, as what you're asking is basically Nero Tech Support.

I'm trying out the guide for the avi2dvd tool. Is there any one unanimous set of tools you'd suggest?

It all depends on what you start with. But generally, before authoring, all source material should be DVD compliant and ready.
To that end, you'll need some kind of mpeg encoder like TMPGEnc or CCE among others (take a look under tools).
Then you need an authoring app - TMPGEnc DVD Author for good ease of use/quality ratio, or DVD-Lab Pro that allows you to do everything imaginable within the DVD specifications if you're willing to invest some time learning. Again, many more alternatives to be found under Tools.
OTOH, If all you're looking for is a way to play AVIs on your DVD player, use some simple (but in contrast to NVE competent) allinone like convertx2dvd or, even better, get a player that plays AVI - saves lots of time and effort.
