There are so many AVI to DVD oneclickwonder apps out there - many free - why not try some of those?
Is it just one file that refuses to work, or is suddenly AVIs you've converted succesfully before starting to fail?
    What does Nero support say?

Okay, this is an old subject, but obviously people are still having this problem or I wouldn't have found it -- so here goes:

I had this exact same problem. It turns out I had K-Lite video codecs installed, with ffdshow codes as default. I uninstalled K-Lite, then reinstalled it WITHOUT any references to ffdshow (just uncheck anything that says "ffdshow" in the initial config screen) and things worked perfectly.

Hope this helps all those newbies like myself.

    The best newbie advice is:
Never ever install any codec pack at all. Install the codec you need, as you need it.
Installing only ffdshow takes you a really long way, as fas as video decoding goes.
