Ok I know generally its always better to copy stuff to the hdd and then burning. What I did was saving my .vob files on dvd media incase my dvds go bad etc.

In this case is it it better to copy the .vobs to the hdd and burning or should I use the .vob from dvd source. I ask this because it takes quite long to copy it to to the hdd.

If you want a lot lower chance of producing coasters, I would always burn from a HD. All it would take is a little glitch in the transfer from the DVD drive during the write and you would have problems. You are depending on two slower devices to sync properly. (Slow as compared to a hard drive.) The speed of both drives could also make it difficult. If your source drive was reading at 8X and your burner was writing at 16X, you could see what would likely happen.

You can give it a try and just do a simulated burn. Watch your buffers and see how well the drive can keep up as compared to the same file on a hard drive.

    ok followup question then:

Which would be faster to copy from dvd media onto harddrive: vob's or mpg's, or would it makes no difference and just come down to file size?

Size of files, not types of files, is what counts. If it is the same amount of data, the difference will be negligable.

  5. Hi. I always copy the vobs to hd and then import them into Dvd Lab (for authoring) or Mpeg Wizzard (for editting) or file merger (does an excellent job w/merging vobs) and haven't had a problem yet to speak of. I took the lazy way a few times in the past and just pulled them straight from the disc and ended up with some horrible results. So for me personally I toss the dvd in DVD Decyrpter and extract the files to hard before editing or authoring. It only takes a few extra minutes and one extra step but the results pay off in the end!

    Cheers.
