Hello all.
For travelling purposes i often make personal copy's of DVD movies, mostly for my 2 young girls. In the beginning all went fine and the copy's/movies i burned where fine.
In the last year however, the copy's i made more and more often start to get "corrupted" (dont have another word for it) when playing on the TV.
What i meen is, the picture gets random squares and lines on screen, the sounds starts to "hickup" and in the end there is no way to listen and look to the sounds and the picture. Sometimes even the whole DVD player "freezes" and cant even be reste by remote controll. It "crashed" and i have to use the main power switch to solve this. Most of the burned DVD 's start fine and looks cool, but halfway or so the problems start.
I dont find anything special or problems when looking on the PC itself.
In order to find out what the problem is i did the following:
I used different DVD's: Philips, Sony, Arathi on different speeds (4x and 8x)
I used 2 different burning software: burning facilities on DVDshrink and Nero
I used 2 different DVD burners: LiteOn LDW 811S and NEC ND 4551A
I used 2 different external DVD players: Harman kardon DVD 25 and Marquant DVD player 28
Whatever combination i take, the problem stays
My fantasie is completaly over so i have to come to the experts. What on earth am i doing wrong?
Is there any senior DVD ripper who can give me more suggestions?
Thx for help,
Broosha

It sounds like cheap media or bad bunch of media. Do you by chance label your backups with sticky labels?
Life is like a pothole, you just have to learn to get around it. -
Non of the used DVD's are labelled in any way.
BTW: With Nero CD-DVD speed i scanned 1 of the DVD's. Found out that untill 44,67% all sectors are green (good), after that all sectors get red (not readable)
What causes this bad sectors? -
Bad media is the most likely explanation. You should be able to check the video before burning to see if there are any problems with it there. There's a remote chance that when ripping it to the hard drive it was corrupted. Try RipIt4Me or DVDFab Decrypter and see if that's any help. This is assuming the problem might be in the file before burning.
Those brands of media can be problematic, depending on which manufacturer made the discs. You can check our DVD Media page for information on the specific discs. Also under 'LISTS' to the left, look at burner and player compatibility. Some combinations of disc, burner and player may cause problems.
EDIT: If the problems are towards the end of the video, that's a common sign of media problems. The outer edge of the DVD is burned last, and that's where most errors can occur. Better media, or making the DVD size a little smaller may help. You can set the size in Shrink for a custom size. Make it ~200MB smaller, depending on where your errors occur. If the errors are more towards the middle of the disc, take a look at the disc surface for blotches or irregularities. Then you know it's the disc at fault. -
Download DVD Identifier and post up a few of your media id codes, dvdguy4 is probably right when he said bad media. You can compare your media id codes (not brand) to the list here. Try to buy real taiyo yudens or verbatims if you can.

Broosha,
Good playback at the beginning, problems starting about half way, getting worse until playback can't continue...it certainly sounds like a classical media problem. However, since you tried different media, and get the same result, it may be another problem. In particular, the two burning programs you used are really just one...Nero. DvdShrink uses the NeroAPI to burn. The first thing you should try is using ImgBurn for the burning. It's freeware, and the best burning program there is.
I see this was your first post here. Welcome to Videohelp. -
Thanks really for all the reply's so far. I need some time to check all the given hints so far. Pls give me some time to test before replying.

I've read somewhere that IBM did a test and most burned dvds or cds won't last more than a few years. They suggested people with important backups dont use dvd or cd.
