i was going to backup my c drive today onto dvd-r disks but the process fails after about 11% with a message about the reason may be poor media quality but I have tried 4 different types of dvd-r disks but still not luck.
ps. when I insert a blank dvd-r into the drive and go to my computer then click on the D drive it always says insert disk like there is nothing in the drive but when I put a cd-r in the drive it shows cd-r 700mb..... under details on the left hand side, shouldnt it say 4.38GB when a dvd in the drive?
Could the drive firmware be the problem?
the drive is Toshiba SD-R6112 firmware ver. 1030

When I put a blank DVD-R in my drive (Benq 1640), it changes the name of the drive to 'CD Drive' and shows 0 Used and 0 free space in Windows. But it works fine.
On the other hand if I access Nero and the 'Disc Info' it says it has a available capacity of 4,489MB and identifies it properly as a DVD-R.
What program is Acronis using for burning? Can you save the file to the hard drive first then use a different burning program?
And does your burner burn DVDs properly otherwise? Such as when using Shrink or other programs? If not, you could try a firmware upgrade, but they are mostly for helping the burner recognize newer brands of discs, along with changing the read/write speed and DVD region settings, depending on the firmware.
If no success there and media that worked before doesn't work now, try cleaning the laser lens. Next is to consider a burner replacement.
If your problem is only with Acronis, check their site for a FAQ or reported problems. This should just be a simple data disc, so there's not much that the burner or burner software has to do. -

With HDD being extremely cheap these days why not back up to HDD with Nortons Ghost. I have Drive C in a 51/4" rack and the backup drive also in a 51/4" rack, nothing could be easier.

Acronis uses packet writing that is UDF format to DVD-RW discs or else you have to create your own bootable DVD by creating a bootimage(bootimage tool and include the bif file in it) and then include as many Acronis images as you can fit into the iso then burn, then you can boot from any of them no problems in accessing them
Simply burning an image onto any DVD will not work
Or else backup you images directly to an external HDD

Burning an image directly to DVD does indeed work just fine. At least it does in the 3677 release. You may have to use a boot CD with it if you don't make it into a boot disc first, but any direct burn should work with the latest release, which includes an imporoved burning engine. At least that has been my experience. I usually go to HDD myself but the last PC I set up for a friend I used DVD to make an image directly since he has no OS reinstall CD.
