Im wondering if it is possible to encode directly to XviD using this capture card, as most of the video I want to keep on my PC I prefer in XviD, because of the file sizes. Thanks in advance.

No, it's a hardware MPEG encoder. There was a method around about 'fooling' it to output AVI, but that's really a waste of that type of card, IMO.
And welcome to our forums. -

Hi,
You probably don't want to take my word for it, but you will be very disappointed with realtime XVid capture, the only AVI/MPEG 4 codec that does anything even half decent with realtime capture is 3ivX and according to the developers that is more a happy accident than anything else that it does it well, also there is no predictablity in file size for the finished file. The high compression AVI codecs (XVid,DivX) were not developed with realtime capture in mind. There is only 1 capture device I know of (Plextor PX-M402U) that has HARDWARE avi capture and that is with DivX. Best of luck finding the Hack you're looking for, but I'll guarantee you won't like XVid for realtime. -
I don't remember the thread well enough to find it again, but this one is close: https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?p=1502583#1502583
For what you want to do, maybe a ATI capture card would be better. But I agree, direct Xvid capture would be very CPU intensive and I don't know that you could get very good quality capturing in realtiime to Xvid. If I were going to do similar, I would capture in HuffyUV or PicVideo format, then convert.
What I do is use a ADVC-100 to convert the analog video to DV. Then the DV can be converted to Xvid or MPEG-2. I believe there are some hardware Xvid/Divx capture cards on the market. Someone here may have some suggestions. I'll look around a little and edit this post to add a link if I find one. If you really want Xvid/Divx in realtime, that would seem to be the best solution.
EDIT: I found 17 hardware MPEG-4 (Divx or Xvid) capture cards in our 'Capture Cards' page to the left. They vary from PCI to USB interfaces. The prices all seem to be above $100US, but they still might be worth looking into. -
fyi the archos portable media players can do direct capture to avi with add on adapters. A few of the more expensive harddrive based movie/music players have direct recording options. More expensive than what you might be looking for but the results might be worth the cost. Could be worth looking into if you must have divx/xvid encoding.
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
Thanks for the input guys...I dont really want to invest in a new capture card, as I just bought a lot of expensive stuff, such as my PC and car lol, so maybe in the next couple of years. I wouldnt mind the XviD realtime capture, as I think my PC can handle it. I have 2 gigs of ram, and a Dual Core processor, so I think my PC can handle it. I might give it a try, and see how it turns out, becuase my compressions would be faster as well going from AVI to AVI as opposed to MPEG to AVI. Thanks once again for the input
.
Edit- Whats the Huffyuv format...Ive seen this in the capture section of VirtualDub. Is it a better format to capture as opposed to Mpeg2? I basically want an XviD result in the least possible amount of time, so would capturing to Huffyuv be better? -
Hauppauge also sells an add on program called Wing that transcodes to divxx, psp and .264 formats. http://hauppauge.com/wing/index.html
