i have an old music mpg and i want to strip the audio from it to increase the volume...the volume is very low....i know virtualDub does this but can i reconnect the audio track to it w/o having to reencode to an avi then back down to an mpg? Or if I reconnect the audio track...will it increase the size of the mpg substantially?

you determine the size of the audio by what bitrate you choose to encode it at. higher volume isn't going to mean a bigger file size, but higher bitrate is.

you should be able to demux the audio/video, edit the audio and re-encode it to the same bitrate as before, then mux it back together again with no encoding of the video.

Vdub will not open mpeg files. VDub-Mpeg2 will open the file. You will not be able to remux them back together with VDub-Mpeg2 though, it can only save as avi files.

TMPGEnc, the free version, has an mpeg demux/remux function that will work. File-->Mpeg Tools.

Once you have demuxed the files, you can do whatever you like to the audio and then remux them together.

well...tmpg tools did the de multiplexing but theres an issue now...the video/audio is 2:36 long...the audio when stripped is 1:42 long....this is strange,...the audio is mp2 also...any ideas?

I don't know, I have not had this problem TMPGEnc. I guess you could load the mpg into VDub-MPEG2 and save the wav file. Do whatever changes you wanted and then encode back to mp2 with besweet and multiplex with the original mpg file.

thanx lantern...i figured out that the file itself was corrupt somehow..so i re-encoded it by running it through canopus as an svcd..that demuxed it then i used audacity to bump up the volume then used tmpg tools to remux it...it worked..like a charm..thanx for your input
