  1. Dear readers,

    Greetings!

As some of you and I have reported, after ripping a chapter from a DVD via SmartRipper, DVD Shrink, or DVD Decrypter there is a "click" sound at the beginning of each ripped chapter that resembles the sound resulting from a scratch on a vinyl record. After playing around with this, here's what I have found out:

Trying to cut the "click" sound doesn't really work, for it just creates a new "click" sound at the new beginning of the new video (I used MPEG Video Wizard DVD for this).

Trying to fade in the noise so as to disguise it doesn't really work, for it creates a sound resembling "high tension" from big electrical cables (I used MPEG Video Wizard DVD for this).

Strangely, the "click" sound totally dissapeared when I joined a ripped chapter with another ripped chapter (I used Digitbyte MPEG Joiner for this).

I hope this helps, but if you have any experience or comments pertaining these issues, please post to the forum.

  2. I image this is the "broken" MPEG audio stream from a partial GOP - that's why it goes away when you re-join it.

Since the audio can be continuous across chapters, there can be a discontinuity at the cut point. Because the audio goes from zero to whatever value the next sample is at, you get a very high frequency spike (or "click"). If you want to cut it out, cut everything before the first zero crossing (always start at zero). And, of course, it disappears when you join your chapter with the previous chapter - the "proper" sample value is now present where it should be.

  4. Hi, there!

    Thanks for your replies.

SLK001, I appreciate your introducing me to the notion of zero crossing points as I wasn't aware of it. As for trying to fix the "click" sound on the audio of the video clips, please let me know about an MPEG-2 Video Editor (or AVI Video Editor) that can show me these crossing points on the audio part. By using such, I can cut the video accordingly. Up to now, I have just been able to find audio-only editors, unfortunately.

    Bye for now,
