Very high production standards, especially when considering that it's fan produced. But yeah, it would be a pain to aquire them on dial-up.

Up to two days on well-seeded torrents to get the whole DVD, using even a reasonably fast connection, and with everything set at peak efficiency to obtain the best transfer speeds.
I often wonder why people like torrents, that crap is slow.
Reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally ssssssssssssssslllllllllloooooooooowwwwwwwww.

You gotta love Chekov (Walter Koenig) especially after his Psi Cop days with Babylon 5 as Bestor (Teep Level 12)! I bet his input into New Voyages was extensive!
(only wish I knew

I swear, even before DSL and CABLE, when we were on dialup, FTP was faster than what "torrents" are now on broadband or high speed connections!!!
Guess maybe it's easier to find alot of stuff with "torrents" than finding someone that wants to FTp something.... i know this one indapendant movie/dvd that was listed on a site as a torrent did not work, i e-mailed the person that owned the website and movie, e-mailed me back with his FTP info and i DLed it 100 times faster than if i had used the torrent that was not working 8)

B5 .... isn't the release full-screen, but the original airings were true widescreen? Or something to that effect, at least.

The New Voyages are pretty good... at least the first and second episodes. The set quality and costumes are brilliant. It's almost just like watching ST original. I'd love to host them here but we are getting record hits at the moment.

yea.. 1400+ and counting
I'm still confused about what this new (old) hype is all about
with the "new voyages" stuff. I went to the sight forum, to
get (read) info, but it's still confusing.
Did a group of people set out to do their own star trek home
movie ??
And if so, I'd sure love to see a small sample clip, if anyone
has D/L'ed a few, at least for a teaser or too ??
(can't see any harm in a few teasers, here for D/L)
Thanks,

I'm interested now also in checking out an episode or two of this "new voyages", gonna have to check out the downloads.... -
Okay, then maybe it was released in widescreen, matted, but the original airings were all fullscreen.

Babylon 5 is filmed in widescreen (16:9) format, so that when HDTV arrives, the show can be remastered for full-screen video release. The extra picture space is just a bonus; directors compose scenes to fit entirely in the normal 4:3 aspect ratio of today's television, at the same time making sure that the edges of the picture can be included later on.
You can see the widescreen film in action during the title sequence, which is shown letterboxed.
But i still swear i used to watch it in widescreen on cable because i remember being pissed when they finally released it on vhs and it was fullscreen -

FTP or File Transfer Protocol is a commonly used protocol for exchanging files over any network that supports the TCP/IP protocol (such as the Internet or an intranet). There are two computers involved in an FTP transfer. The first computer is an FTP server. This computer listens on the network for connection requests from other computers. Another computer (called the client) can make a connection to the FTP server by using FTP client software. Once connected, the client can do a number of file manipulation operations such as uploading files to the server, download files from the server, rename or delete files on the server and so on. Any software company or individual programmer is able to create FTP server or client software because the protocol is an open standard. Virtually every computer platform supports the FTP protocol. This allows any computer connected to a TCP/IP based network to manipulate files on another computer on that network regardless of which operating systems are involved (if the computers permit FTP access). There are many existing FTP client and server programs, and many of these are free.If in doubt, Google it. -
you got me again. im afrraid that everytime i use google they read my mind and take a little bit of my soul. so asyou can see i am reluctant to use google

With the File Transfer Protocol or FTP, you can't send info just like posting an email. You have to login to another computer that already is setup to send files to you. That computer is called the FTP server which then serves you files that you request, or accepts files you wish to send to it.
FTP can be fast as the number of computers that can connect at the same time is often limited. FTP is also used in many web pages - you just have to click on a link and your web browser does the rest. You can also use specific FTP programs for more advanced options in file transfer. -
In case anyone's curious, I decided to bring this topic back from the dead because things (speeds) have changed a wee bit. I didn't read this thread back in January when first posted. But recently, I read an article about the recent 40th Anniversary bash in Seattle. They gave a link to this website:
http://www.startreknewvoyages.com
I'm currently downloading the torrent for the "In Harms Way" DVD-ready episode. And, if speeds remain consistent, the whole thing should be downloaded in less than 5 hours. I'm just minimizing the download while I do other stuff online. -
I just watched "In Harm's Way" and I was pretty impressed given that it's a fan-made episode. They obviously have a lot of support not only from the fan community but from some of the original people connected to the show. The consulting producer for the episode (and I assume other upcoming episodes) is Gene Roddenberry, Jr. And in this episode, they got actor William Windom to reprise his role as Commodore Decker - who apparently didn't die when his shuttlecraft was gobbled up by that cone-shaped planet killer (episode 35, "The Doomsday Machine") ... but was slingshotted back into the 20th Century (and still had the shuttlecraft parked in his garage, hehe).
This New Voyages episode also explains how Captain Pike sustained his radiation injuries. In any case, these fans know their Trek stuff. And I thought this fan-made episode had much better special effects than the fan-made "Star Wars - Revelation" effort. But, that's just my opinion.
"In Harm's Way" is episode 2 of New Voyages. I'm downloading the pilot episode, "Come What May," at this moment.
One weirdism to mention, though. They coded their DVD files in a workable but rather cockeyed manner. "In Harm's Way" is a 55min33sec episode divided up into 5 VOB files of varying lengths, all under a gig in size. -
fyi I believe the head guy that plays kirk worked on the NEXT GENERATION in some capacity..... probably as some kind of advisor or assistant if I remember right.....
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
I think that a lot of ISP's are screwing with torrents (slowing traffic, blocking ports etc) - I used to get some incredible speed downloading (far better than I would commonly get via ftp) but not any more...
-
I have a question, the episode with Walter Koening - where is it? I see they have the trailer and they said it was released on Sept 8th, so where is the download?
-
According to their Episode site it's still in post with the release target to be mid to late 2006. That announcement was for a viewing at the Star Trek 40th Anniversary Gala Celebration and Convention, not the release date. I didn't attend, so I don't know if it was indeed shown but if it was then I would think the release date is just around the corner. The rumor in their forum is that it will be available in about a month (from the viewing on the 8th).

Note - In a correction to what I said earlier, the New Voyages honchos decided to call their pilit episode "Episode 4.00." It had earlier been referred to as 4.01. In any case, that's the numbering sequence now.
What's interesting is that the website gives no download linkage to sites featuring the pilot episode, 4.00, "Come What May." I finally found a torrent with a pretty good speed on it. Episode 4.01, "In Harm's Way," had some cockeyed coding in the first download I made (from a torrent). But the 2nd attempt from a download mirror produced a better copy.
The acting isn't all that bad in either episode. And the screenplay writing is pretty good, too. I read that Episode 4.02, "To Serve All My Days" (with Koenig) is supposed to be out in October. But some people in Star Trek forums say that's an optimistic estimate - that saying "before the end of the year" might be a better estimate of release. I'll keep my eyes open. -
