I am having a problem playing back some MPEG files. The files are about 20-30 minutes in length but are only playing for about 30 seconds in windows media player. They were working fine up until i had to reinstall windows on my computer. It seems like it's some sort of software/codec error or something. It's just not reading the entire 20 or 30 minutes and just playing the first 30 seconds. Is there any way to fix this?

I've tried VLC player, and it works in there but I don't like that player too much since it doesn't do playlists quite like windows media player and i have to open each file individually.

If someone could please help point out a certain codec or fix that would allow me to play my mpegs in windows media player fully, i'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Windows and WMP doesn't come with a MPEG-2 codec, so you must have installed one. It may be corrupt. VLC uses it's own codecs. You can select multiple videos in VLCs playlist.

Anyway, you might try Codec Sniper and see if the MPEG-2 codec is corrupted. If so, you can get Stinkys MPEG2 Codec or install a program like the trial version of PowerDVD, then uninstall it and the codec will remain.

  3. I Suggest you remove all Codecs from the PC (including all players) and then re-do them once you know there are no conflicts. Personaly I use FFDshow for all my codec needs so i would recommend it.

    Hi Sefy

I wonder if you might be able to help me. I have a codec problem (see thread 'mpegs won't play in wmp'. I'm hoping ffdshow would solve this for me and when I went to the site , there are two versions (MMX and SSE). Can you tell me which one I should use or how to find out? Someone did direct me to a tool to help identify my CPU, which I understand would tell me which one to use but the link wasn't correct or had moved.

    Thanks if you can help.

  5. The new FFDshow (found on AfterDawn) has new CPU detection routine, I don't recommend getting it from some weird sites as i've found a few "builds" infected with viruses and malware. The origina on AfterDawn is the real deal.

Every single CPU today has MMX, and if your PC is atleast in the last 3 years then it should also have SSE support as well (all Intel CPU's do and newer AMD as well).

Thanks for that. I'll give it a try ( I had heard about some iffy sites for ffdshow). Would you be able to tell me if re-registering quartz.dll is a fairly straightforward process as I've been told that is worth trying. I understand how to do it (I think) I'm just a little worried in case it adds to my problems. if it's fairly risk free I may as well try it.

    Thanks

  7. No problem, i hope it helps out.
As for quartz.dll, should be easy using the regsvr32 command
/u to uniregister and just regularaly would register it again.
