My Lite-on 5005x burns dvd-video with an empty subtitle track. I was wondering if the subtitle track had any purpose whatsoever?

No purpose unless you need it.
I'm assuming a DVD, not a Divx player.
Subtitles would be part of a VOB file, and not normally visible when looking at a DVD in Explorer. and would not be a separate file in the standard DVD structure. If you have a separate file, then most players would ignore it. Maybe for computer software players as a data file?
See 'WHAT IS 'DVD' to the upper left for the DVD structure. <<<<<<<

the subtitle is in the vobs and when selecting it on a dvd player no text appears. However thanks for clarifying the issue.
