This is weird, but whenever i "do things" (e.g. click on the file name in Explorer Details view, hover the mouse over the file name) with two xvid avi files in Windows Explorer, the cpu spikes for a few seconds. As far as I can tell, windows is having trouble getting the file info for the xvid files, to show in the tooltip. This particular folder has several video files, with several different formats (divx avi, wmv, mpg and thes two xvid avi files), and hovering over each non-xvid file causes no spikes, but the xvids cause a spike.

    Any thoughts on this behavior?

    Thanks!

    More info...

Immediately after the cpu unspikes while hovering over the xvid avi, its tooltip comes up with the video info.

Also, I noticed that when hovering over one particular divx avi, the cursor changes to the arrow-hourglass very briefly, before the tooltip appears, but that tooltip still comes up quickly with no cpu spike. The other divx files do not show the arrow-hourglass cursor at all when bringing up the tooltip.

Somethings wrong with the file and Explorer is having a hard time trying to read it. I run into that occasionally. Try dropping it into VirtualDub and scan for errors.

And you could have just edited your first post to add the other comments.

Just downloaded VirtualDub...not sure how to scan the file for errors. When I load this xvid file into VirtualDub, the transport controls are disabled, so I can't play the video.

Please advise on how to scan for errors.

Load the video then click on the video tab. Select report all errors and click ok. Then it will scan the video and report a dialog box with whatever it finds.

It took a loooooong time to scan the video, and when it appeared to be finished, I saw no dialog showing any results. Oh well...probably user error, but I'll try it again some time when I won't have to use the pc for 6 hours.

    Thanks for the help.

If it takes 6 hours I would suggest your file has some major errors.

  8. It sounds like you're missing the keyframe index at the end of the Xvid file (usually from an incomplete download). Try using DivFix to build a new index.

VirtualDub can also repair the keyframe flags for the video. If you use the 'File>Open file' you will see at the bottom of the page 'Ask for extended options after this dialog'. Check that box, then select your video. In the next window, check 'Re-derive keyframe flags'. This may take some time. May help or maybe not. You would have to save the video when done, probably with full processing. I'm not sure on that.

I've had a few videos that Explorer locked up on. I usually just deleted them. It depends on how much effort you want to expend. Sometimes just resaving with full processing in VirtualDub will fix them also.
