When I tried to open a .RAR file using WinRAR a message came up about 10 seconds into extracting saying 'You need to have the following volume to continue extraction' under that it shows the directory of the .RAR file and it also said 'insert a disk with this folume and press ok to try again or press cancel to break extraction'
the file was 200mb and it happened earlier to another file with that similar size.
I have WinRAR 3.60
why is this?

This an archived file using WinRAR's spanning. You need to have all parts of the file in order to extract. Where did this file come from? You may find the others there.

they are football matches in 4 different parts but I only downloaded to first one to try out, so it should work if I got the rest of them?

no problem. Alot of times these archives are suffixed by numbers 01 . . 02 . . 03 etc.

If there are PAR files (extensions, PAR, PAR2, P01, P02, etc.) download at least one or two of those as well. These are files to be used with Quickpar and can check for any damage to the archive and repair it.
Incidentally, you can also preview the matches you already downloaded by simply trying to extract the parts you already have. Check the option "Keep broken files" in Winrar's extraction screen and then hit OK to start extraction. Assuming you have enough of the video files and a decent player (like Media Player Classic), you should be able to preview a bit of it to see if it's worth downloading the rest.
