I'd like to add a different audio track to my dvd to play simultaneously with the orginal audio. First, am I correct to assume I'd have to demux, delete the sound from one channel (Left or Right), and add my other audio to that channel? If that's the idea, then how? I know how to demux, but I can't get Nero or BeSweet to make the substitution.
What I'm trying to do is add Mike Nelson/Kevin Murphy's joke track to Star TrekV dvd.

You'll probably need to use an audio program like Audacity. You wouldn't need to delete a channel and replace it with your track. You could just overlay it. (But you could replace a channel if that's what you want.)

I need some Audacity advice, gadgetguy. Audacity doesn't like my ac3 (makes a squealing sound). Do I need to convert the ac3 to mp3 or wav first? The joke track I'm adding is mp3.
After that's figured out, do I open one file, then import the second one, then somehow save them both? I know Nero wave editor can convert it all back to ac3.

wav would be best, as mp3 compression is not pretty.

To blend the two tracks, open the first track (File -> Open),
then import the second track (Project -> Import Audio). You should now have both tracks side by side in the window. Adjust volumes etc as needed, the use File -> Export as Wav to create you file. You may get a warning about the audio being downmixed to stereo - just click OK.

Blended the tracks as wav, converted back to ac3, so thank you both for helping me with that!
However, Muxman immediately rejects it. Muxman will accept the original ac3. I haven't added the video to Muxman, so it's not some incompatiblity with that (yet). What is happening?

When you saved it out, was it 48kHz ? You can legally create 44.1kHz AC3, but not for DVD. Perhaps this is Muxman's problem.

If you did use 48 kHz audio, try running the AC3 thru AC3Fix.

So which is the correct khz? 44.1 or 48? Is there a plugin so Audacity accepts AC3? When I open an AC3 file, it turns it into MP3 and makes it sound squealing.
My final outputted Audacity Wav file was 44.1 khz. Ac3fixgui didn't fix it, so I re-combined the 2 wav files and outputted as 48 khz file, and converted to ac3 in Nero. Muxman accepted it, and it all worked out, but I'd like to know about the khz and plugin.
    Thanks again for everyone's help.

DVD audio is always 48 kHz. My suggestion was - if it is 48 kHz but still doesn't work, there maybe something wrong with the AC3 that AC3Fix can cure.
I use ffmpeggui for anything-to-ac3 encodes. Didn't know Nero did that.

Audacity only accepts WAV, MP3, and OGG Vorbis. As mats pointed out, DVD audio is always 48kHz but by default Audacity is 44.1kHz. To my knowledge Audacity does not support plugins, but if it does I'd be happy to be corrected.

Gotcha, mats.hogberg. Changing to 48 khz did the trick. Nero Wave editor will deal with AC3; I think I needed a plugin. However, when I tried to change the khz ("Convert Sample rate"), Nero zeroed out the audio, which is why I had to go back to Audacity to re-combine the wavs and output to 48 khz.

You guys have been especially helpful with this project, so if anyone wants a copy of the dvd, email me and I'll be glad to send one. It's a pseudo-MST3k version of StarTrekV.
