IMO, five things are important for any Mac DVD drives, in this order.
    - Is it iApps supported? If Apple installed it, this drive should be okay. (System Profiler > Hardware > Disc Burning > Burn Support: Yes)
    - Dual Layer support. Apple's new SuperDrive does.
    - How is the media support? Can you burn low speed if you want to? Is there a good track record of firmware updates which to allow high speed burns on new types of media? This is often brand specific. And don't expect it to come from Apple...
    - Can it be flashed RPC1 (region free)? With newer drives there could be some time before a patch is available. Not sure about Sony drives, but Pioneer aid is good in this department.
    - Is it speedy? With a new machine, this should be okay. Apple says 16x. I see mostly 8x discs in stores, so no problem there.

How does the sony stack up? You tell us! You're the one with the brand new flashy drive...

  3. Ill keep an eye on it. but don't hold your breath Im not a heavy user!

BTW know how I can find out if the Pioneer needs flashing?

I have a Pioneer 110 in my G4 and it wouldn't flash properly some of you may recall that thread. so for 31 dollars US deliverd I got the 111 for the Pro and will pass the 110 along to the next user

it works fine but might not have the latest firmware

its going to take several days to migrate from the G4 to the Pro

then Ill try iMovie and import into iLife 6 and see what the sony does

Ill report back to this thread but I bet someone who does this moreofftern thatn I will have the info first.

BTW aside from a scarcity of Firewire ports on the back (1) its a fery fine machine it havs the finest internals iver ever seen in a Mac

drives just slide in, 2d optical about the same you have to attach a ribbon there

    waiting for the Crucial RAM

    cheers
