I'm not sure how to check the UDF version, the libray sleeve of the Panasonic says "This disc is in comformity with DVD-RAM Version 2.1 / 3X SPEED DVD-RAM Revision 1.0 standard. I have no info on the Traxdata except what Nero Tool tells me that it has 1 layer and version 6.

  4. Do you have a DVD-RAM driver on your PC?

Looking in Device Manger for my Writer it shows I have the Microsoft Driver 5.1.2535.0, not sure if that means it is a DVD-RAM driver or not.

Are you using firmware A306. If not you may upgrade to the RPC1 or auto reset version. http://tdb.rpc1.org/#GSA4160B

In adiction Nero InCD can be used a UDF reader.

HI, sorry to butt in to the thread, I have an LG GSA-4163B Drive and am having exatcly the same problems with Panasonic DVD-RAM media, I have not tried another make of RAm media yet but will try soon. I have upgraded the firmware to A106 and have tried installing InCD but with no luck.

Is it possible that LG drives are not compatable with these Panasonic media?

Yes looks like we have the same problem here and I can confirm that both my drive and your 4163B are compatable, my friend has the same drive as your and has no problems at all reading Pana DVD-RAM, I have been comparing my driver info and anything else that could be the problem to as why his reads them ok and mine dosen't, so far I haven't found what the problem is,
the RAM disc that my drive will read could be because of the way it has been formatted as Nero Info Tool shows that it was formatted in joliet and not in in UDF, and I think this is the main problem why the drive is not able to read the Pana discs, I'm not sure where to go from here to make the drive read UDF formatted discs.

You should review the software package that possibly was delivered with your drive. For proper DVD-RAM use you need DVD-RAM-drivers for your drive as without it you can just use the limited DVD-RAM-abilities which are included in WIN-XP. Some time ago the german LG-website offered DVD-RAM-drivers for download, but not anymore. On the following link-page you will find links to DVD-RAM-drivers:

I have installed the DVD-RAM driver but with no diffrence. I have tried running the write protect and format programs included with the driver but both report that there is no disc in the drive even when there is, I have tried this with a blank disc and one recorded in a Panasonic stand alone DVD Recorder.

I haven't installed the DVD-RAM driver yet but it doesn't sound like it will work wth my drive if it didn't work in your writer, my friend also has a Pana DVD Recorder and can edit discs from his recorder with his 4263B writer, can't work out why he can and we can't.

Try having your friend with the Panasonic DVD recorder format the disc for you then see if your LG drive can see this disc. If it can then it might have to do with how the disc's are formatted from the factory.

Just to bring this thread up to date, I have now installed the RAM drivers and it made no difference, I have also formatted a disc in a Panasonic DVD Recorder and this made no difference, on both ocassions my computer said "Please Insert Disc Into Drive" I am still thinking this is a UDF problem as it will read my RAM disc which was formatted in Joilet.

Well another update, I decided to buy a new drive an LG GSA-H10N "Super Multi DVD Drive" it installed fine and works great....except it won't read any Ram discs, so no change at all, I guess I have proved it is definately a software/ driver problem, so anyone else able to help on this issue would be most welcome.

I have bought a new Samsung DVD-writer recently which is also capable to use DVD-RAM. I am using Nero7 with the INCD-driver which adds packet-writing and DVD-RAM-writing abilities.

I am using Nero 6.8.1.4 and also have InCD, I'm not sure what else to put on to get it to read RAM discs.

My LG GSA-4166B and Nero InCD are capable of reading Panasonic media just fine.

Actually I tested formatting DVD-RAM disks in my PC using UDF 2.0 and these disks were readable in the Panasonic recorder.
