I have two Dell system, both are 2.8Ghz, running WinXP.
They come with 40GB and 80GB respectively (SATA drives).
I add one second SATA drive to each of them (80GB and 160GB respectively), get them to work fine.
Then I add one DVD writer to each of them.
The first system got the NEC DL/16X DVD+/-RW and the system recognize it, I can use Nero to burn DVD as usual.
The second system got the Pioneer 105 (an old DVD writer taken from an older system which I replace). The second system only recognize this Pioneer 105 as a CD drive !!!
I have gone into the BIOS setup page and found it is setup as PATA0 drive, and it says clearly DVD-R/-RW. And this DVD writer works well on my older machine for 2+ years.
What should I do to correct this issue ?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Check first that DMA is enabled for the channel the burner is on. You might check your IDE cable also and upgrade it to an 80 conductor if it isn't already. And make sure your burner jumpers are set properly.
Last thing, does it recognize a DVD when you put it in? Some writers will be shown as a CD drive by XP when there is no disc. Do any of your burner programs see it as a DVD burner?
That's the simple stuff, from there, I'm not sure. Maybe something in the registry. -
I forgot to mention that the system has a DVD/CD-RW combo drive (which works fine), I simply move its IDE cable to my Pioneer 105 drive. Whether I set the later to Master or Cable Select, it's still get recognized as CD drive. My Nero software recognized only as CD-R !!! No DVD video selection is shown.

Have you ever updated the firmware? I think the last firmware version for the 105 was 1.33

Hmm... I put one of my DVD disc in this DVR-105 drive as one of you suggested and it plays as usual.
Then I bring up Nero to burn a blank DVD-R and now Nero sees it as DVD recorder.
Dont' know really what happens, I left everything the way it was (cable, connection, etc...)
I may look at the firmware upgrade, don't know what's new in it.
Thanks, that tip somehow did it.ktnwin - PATIENCE -
i have a pioneer 104 and i had the same problem. temperamental but it worked. sometimes i would delete the ide controller and reboot for a reinstall. i will be reinstalling the drive soon to burn a stash of cheap blanks that only seem to run on this drive and an nec 1100 i have on another machine. i keep it because it's still a great drive. i am currently running a vintage toshiba sd-5112 flashed to burn at 4x. handles current media just fine.

I suspect it's more of a XP OS problem than Nero with it being misidentified. You might try the firmware upgrade if you don't have the latest version, though it may not make any difference. Often just putting a DVD in the drive may let the OS identify it correctly. As long as you get it to work, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Hmm.. although I can burn DVD-R but ripping a DVD or playing a DVD behaves quite strangely as follows:
1) after power on, I put in a DVD to play, it plays normally no issue
2) I eject the disc by pushing the eject button of the DVD drive, put in another DVD disc and play
3) the second one play for a few seconds then the screen shows a video section from the previous DVD disc.
4) putting another DVD in will result in exactly the same problem.
Note that the same problem occurs when I rip DVDs.
It appears WinXP cache DVD disc data in memory and did not recognized that the disc has been ejected. I was a bit frustrated at first but then figure out a way to avoid this problem.
Instead of pushing the eject button on the DVD drive, I right click on the DVD drive icon (drive E: for example), then select "Eject'. This way Windows knows that the disc has been ejected and clear out cache data for that disc. And I have no problem switching discs as above.
Has anyone had this similar issue ?ktnwin - PATIENCE
