  1. It's equipped with a dvd player but i don't think that's going to work. Is it possible to play them in quicktime? Any help is appreciated, the "genius" at the mac store was too busy polishing his genius sign to give me a clear answer. Also I'm looking for a decent high end 5 disc vcd/dvd player w/ pro scan, any ideas?

  2. You have several ways to play a VCD in a Mac.
The DVD drive can also read CD disks so reading the VCD disk is not a problem.
Software choices for playing the VCD include the QuickTime Player (Pro or regular) and several shareware VCD Player programs.
With QuickTime Player you need to go into the VCD disk and then go into the MPEGAV folder and select the .DAT file to start the movie.
You can also create an association in File Exchange control panel so that .DAT files automatically open in QuickTime Player when you double click on them.
The other VCD player programs can just play the disk directly without any fuss and have additional features.
I'm not sure but I don't think OSX supports VCD yet so you may have to use OS9 or Classic mode for now.
If you want to create your own VCD you need a CD burner and also encoding/authoring software. Toast 5 Titanium is one and there are others but not as many as available on Windows. You can also use VirtualPC to run Windows programs on your Mac.
Here are some good Mac video and VCD links:
