  1. After less than 2 years of use, my iLo DVDr04 broke Is it possible for me to open it up and replace the burner? I was thinking of using my PC's NEC burner and getting a new DVD burner for my PC. Or is there some sort of firmware/software in the burner itself? I'm not mechanical, I'm hoping I can just unplug the power supply and break out the burner and replace it.
I hate to spend another $100 only to find that this will probably happen again. My VCR lasted 10 years of heavy use.

    Thanks

  2. Yes

    http://www.techolio.com/

This site covers DVD replacement for the ilo The site seems to be out of service at present.
I have used LiteOn burners [1693s and prior] But some have reported luck with some NEC and others

  3. Interesting site, thanks.
I was able to get my dvd draw to open, by taking the machine apart, but all I can see on the display is the word, "Hello". It won't play a dvd or a music cd. Is it more so the motherboard and not the drive? I was able to get my last DVD out, and it recorded my show perfectly. Been pressing all the buttons on the machine and the remote, but nothing is happening. Does this mean I'm screwed?

  4. The ilo will display Hello if the DVD is not recognized. and could mean the drive is bad or the connections are bad. While some will say clean the laser, It has been my experence that a dirty laser will not prevent the unit fron operating as to Hello. Only, Not read or burn properly.
I have Fixed some 18 drives and 2 others were beyond a fix
As an example I have 2 ilo RHD04 with Fxed Original drives and a R04 with a LiteOn 1693s PC drive. A LiteOn 5045 also with 1683s but now has the orig. fixed drive All required some m echanical changes

Your machine as those above will operate fine with the replacement drive BUT The mod can be daunting especially if one wants to maintain the original look of the unit.
This type of change is mechanical and requires time.

The ilo 04 series can be hacked. If you do not have it hacked and do not require it --
Check the connections and clean the laser. If it still will not work I would look to another unit preferably with a HDD.

It could be a Mainboard but I very much doubt it. One thing that can cause a problem is a incorectly operating power supply. Out of some 30 units I have only seen this One time

    PS
Dont Junk the R04 it may be of value and use to someone.
AND don't push a lot of buttons and to fast, the Ilo will not react well to this
