    Hi all,

My Pioneer DVR 106, stopped recognizing cd's, don't know what's the problem, checked the cables, reinstalled win, same sh*t.

Anyways, I'am looking to buy new one now. Need advise witch one is better?

Pioneer DVR 111D or LiteOn SHM-16H5S, I'am leaning towards the LiteOn because my Pioneer just died , and because LiteOn has Lightscribe!

    So witch one is better?

    Thanks

  2. most of the people will say pioneer, I use nec.....

in the end you have to decide for you. lite-on is not bad, but a lot of peolpe complained about sony drives (which are lite-on) and lite-on dying.

you know, sooner or later, all die.

i just got the Pioneer DVR 111D to replace a dead freecom FX50, and if you flash to with 111L firmware it
can write both DVD RAM & Burn Labelflash disc which i think is the same as Lightscribe.

Pioneer DVR 111D It is an excellent drive. The 111D variant does not write to DVD-RAM, but if your a CD/DVD freak, you can flash this drive to enable both DVD-RAM and LabelFlash capabilities. However, you WILL invalidate your warranty, and will NOT be bound to replace faulty drives! Visit http://tdb/rpc1.org and download the Pioneer 111L firmware 8.19 INT. You can flash from within Windows.

I would go with whatever is cheaper. Keep in mind whatever drive you purchase it is already consider old technology as single layer optical media is now 15/25GB in size and uses a blue laser.

i have both. the lite-on is good at burning cds and labels but sucks horribly at dvdrs. i had to get a 111 to burn usable dvdrs. so now i have both in the comp. lightscribe is ok but the discs are 3 - 4 times as expensive as normal and the labels wear off quickly if not kept in a case.

  9. Pioneer and NEC drives are also quieter while in operation. I currently have a NEC 2510a, and it is very quiet. My old Lite-On 52x CD-R drive sounded like a plane taking off. I'm not sure if Lite-on has addressed the noise in their new drives.

  10. I don't know if LiteOn makes drive like they used to, but I have a 4X single layer drive that's over 4 years old and still worked when I replaced it with a faster DL burner. I burned tons of discs and I think I had a couple coasters because of the PC it was in.

Well, Region-free is non-negotiable to me, and the other functionality the hacked firmware unlocks ain't too shabby either. Who cares, when you can get another OEM Pioneer 111 for $42., should things go wrong ? (But I think you can usually re-flash and try again.) I've never had to contact the manufacturer for warranty issues, on any basic components like this.
