I haven't really started using my Pixma yet, which I bought secondhand, but one of the black ink cartridges has run out. Instead of buying them one at a time I was going to buy a set from ebay and keep them until the other colours start running out.

Sounds like a dumb question to me too, but is there any time limit on how long you can have these cartridges lying around before putting them in your printer?? I think the ones from ebay might be refills.

    hi,
all inkjet cartriges have a shelf life...!!! some are better that others...... I would not buy any extra cartriges unless you plan to use them with in 6 months....!! and don't buy any cartriges that have only a short time left on the shelf life!!

note: the issues with ink is that it not so much things driy out but the ink particles , in the liquiid will settle and hense clog your ink jets!!! and for some printers that can be a disaster, clogg ink jets..!!

Thanks guys. I am not used to the printer yet so am not sure how fast I will use the inks. I'll buy them one at a time for now like you both said.

To maximize all printer ink and toner resources you should store them as you store your media. In a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Before usage, shake the cartridge well as you would before opening a paint can. This can reinvigorate the stagnant ink or toner.

    Hi rof....
to add to what you were saying..... when in storage they should be shaken ever so often....
how often varies on the manufacture...
for example.. espson.... they have bad problem with there ink jet clogging because the particles settle during a short time of inactivity...... I know when in ithe machine it recommended to use the machine at least once a week to keep the cartridge stirred.. smiling..

now too long a go they did modifiy the formula for ink.. and hopefully that helps.. because a lot of people were complaining about this issue..
