  1. I have a .avi file that is around 138MB. It's 22 mins of video. Using Virtualdub, I cut out an 18 second clip that I liked. Now I want to save this as an .avi file ....... every time I try to save, it processes for a couple seconds and then outputs a 390MB file!!! I have tried the "save as" function as well as some others. All the same. I tried switch to direct stream copy. No change. I'm not really good with this piece of software, so some help would be great! Thanks!

  2. If you really used Direct Stream Copy for both the audio and video the size would not have grown. (Unless your using VirtualDubMPEG2 of VirtualDubMod and are editing an MPEG file -- which can't be direct stream copied).

You should work in Video -> Fast Recompress mode, then select an output codec (probably Divx or Xvid) and set it up to generate the bitrate (or quality) you want. Then Save as AVI. You can usually leave Audio in Direct Stream Copy mode.

    Try this:

    1) Open your source video.

    2) Select Video -> Fast Recompress.

    3) Mark-in and Mark-out to select the 18 second segment you want to save.

    3) Video -> Compression... Select Xvid as the compression codec and press Configure to configure the codec. In the Xvid config dialog press the Load Defaults button.

    4) Save as AVI.

That should give you an acceptable size.

It sounds like you didn't pick a compression codec. If so, it will save as a Uncompressed RGB by default, which will be huge. Just select the same codec as the original file uses. Direct Stream copy should not re-encode, though.
