  1. I have a GO Video VR3845 DVD recorder + VCR. It just stopped recognizing DVDs. Tech support says it is not calibrating when the disc is inserted and it needs to go to a service center. Anyone familiar with this situation? Is there anyway I can "calibrate" it?

    Thanks

I started getting power calibration errors with my burner. Thanks to the advice of the fine people on this site I found that I had a batch of bad discs. Before you take it in you might want to try a different batch or brand of discs.

  3. Exactly what I suspect they are telling you is that the callibration is power callibration errors and it isn't a adjustable type of thing.

I've had that error on two drives and changing media worked for a while until the laser got worse and then they were toast.

IMHO if they are offering warranty I'd be sure to take it befor ethe warranty runs out.

  4. Thanks for the responses. All the discs once worked including +R, -R, and commerical DVDs. Now nothing works. When you say power calibration, does that mean the laser is getting weaker? It still plays .wav and MP3 CDs.

  5. CDs use a different lase than DVDs. Does it still read DVDs? If so you could use it as a reader and get a new burner.

Also reading a disc needs less power than burning a disc does. If reading used the same power it would just damage the discs.

If under warranty get it fixed else replace it with a good brand. Or if a Costco member they have a really good return policy.

Calibration will cost you anywhere between $40-$70 (conservatively) plus shipping both ways if you are not under warranty. Since this device retails for $120-$160 you may want to consider a new purchase.
