It's a PCI-E X1 slot. Used for some modems, SCSI and network cards. Not too many cards made for it. The other PCI-E slots are X16, such as for the video card, then a couple of regular PCI slots.

There's PCIe x1 video cards out, although Newegg only lists one right now - the HIS (ATI) x1300 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814161017

I think Matrox has a x1 card out as well, but not @ NewEgg.

and they also list an ATI Theater 550 based capture card by Power Color - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16815117802

    and some x1 SATA, SATA/IDE combo controller & RAID (0/1, 0+1 nothing too advanced on x1) cards - http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Submit=ENE&N=2010150410&Subcategory=410&...InDesc=pcie+x1

..nothing in the way of pci-e x1 sound or network cards, nor do I know of any on the market.. Although they're bound to be on the way.

  5. When (if?) is PCI going to be completely phased out in favor of PCIe?

Soon hopefully. But I don't think it will until at least the next decade before PCI is relegated to museum status.
