First of all, I am not sure that I am asking these questions in the correct forum. If not, please direct me to the correct one.

I am a retired senior citizen with plenty of time but no knowledge of the DVD process. I am trying to take DVD recordings from my Sony RDRVX511 recorder, remove commercials, and re-burn it back to a DVD that will play on a stand alone player.

I opened up a program in Roxio's VideoWave and editied the material which was a real pain.
VideoWave kept hanging up and I constantly had to save what I had and restart the program.
I probably do not have a fast enough computer (Pentium 4, 3.20GHz, 1.00 GB of Ram). Can anyone suggest a free alternate that they have had success with? When I saved it, it ended up being a MPEG file that will play on my computer but not on my stand alone players.

Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong and possibly make suggestions on how I can improve my procedures? Thank You.

    Respectfully,

    Graphic Guy

    Hi graphics guy.

First of all, your computer is more than adequate for doing what you want it to do. In fact you probably have a faster machine than half the people on this site .

TMPGenc DVD Author is a good simple program for re-authoring video's. As far as editing the dvd content to remove commercials i really like Womble MPEG Video Wizard. It allows you to import the .vob files, cut out the "fat" and snap the remaining video segments together. It will then create a new mpeg file via stream copy so it doesn't actually re-encode (it's fast!).

Once you edit it then you can import the video clips into the DVD Author application.

    You would need to:
    1. copy the .vob files down to your hard drive
    2. edit with the mpeg video wizard
    3. re-author the dvd with TMPGEnc DVD Author

    Graphics Guy,
You also may want to look into whether or not you can add chapters to your RW while it is in the recorder. Placing a chapter marker at the start and stop of the commercial may make your like a whole lot easier when you take that disc to your computer.
I know this theory works well with +RW discs....I'm not sure about -RW since I've never owned a recorder that can record to -R/-RW.

    Hi Greymalkin,

Thank you for the speedy reply but the cost of the two programs you suggest ($210) is a little out of my range. I was looking for something a little more economical, preferably free.

I don't believe that my recorder allows me to do this and wouldn't this require me to view the show while it is being recorded?

I love my fast forward button....
But in all seriousness...back in the day when recorders first came out it was almost a necessity for me to add chapter markers prior to doing any further work on my stuff. Now with little freebie gadgets like FixVTS...the problems that plagued us(like audio sync issues) are almost gone.
It may not be a big deal nowadays....forget I mentioned it...I didn't think -R/-RW could do what I suggested.

    Hi to all,

When I record via my TV tuner card to my hard drive I end up with a MPG file. This file will play on the computer but not on either one of my DVD stand alone players. Is there a way to break up this file so it will play on a stand alone DVD player? If so, are there any FREE programs that will do this simply without requiring a vast amout of background knowledge?

Again if I am addressing this to the wrong forum please let me know and direct me to the correct one.

    Thanks to all.

A few dvd players will read mpg files off of a dvdr. Looks like you don't have those so you must author them to dvd and burn a dvd to read it properly.

You can use dvd author gui which is free. I use tmpgenc dvd author but its not free ($90 for 2.0).

There are authoring guides available on this website. Check the how to section on the left of the screen <-------
