  1. A friend of mine has a HP PC that she doesn't need. The PC is a piece of crap, but I was thinking of taking the HDD out of it and putting it into one of my PC's. Just not sure if it's compatible.

What all needs to match up? The PC I want to install into is a:

    Compaq Preserio 6010
    AMD Athlon XP 1600+
    1.40GHz, 224MB RAM
Ran Belarc advisor to see what type of HDD, and I guess it's a SATA drive...
    "ST340810A [Hard drive] (40.02 GB) -- drive 0, s/n 6FB1X8CT, rev 3.90, SMART Status: Healthy"

So, assuming it's a SATA, is the only requirement of the other HDD is that it's SATA, or what do I need to look for?

Also, do I need any drivers? I built my own PC successfully w/ some help from ppl around here, but it's been a while and i'm a little rusty.

Oh and the PC i'm pulling the HDD from is a Hewlit-Packard(old old). That's all I know about it right now, but if more info is needed I can check...

As long as you have a free connection, I would hook it up format it and use it, Good Luck

  3. SATA and PATA connectors are very different. You can easily tell what the drive has by looking at it:

This will allow your SATA drive to work with ATA/100. Of course, your motherboard may have SATA support.

Even better is to just buy a SATA PCI card for $20.
