My Lite-On SOHW-1693S is not working any more.

It fails trying to write Verbatim DVD+R and +DL. It writes very poorly to Sony made in Japan media, it does not work properly wit Maxell made in Japan... In the past it worked wonderfully with this media.

    In the mean time I’m using a NEC 2500 x-flashed to NEC 2510 2.F9.

I’m in the hunt of a new one. This time I will get a unit that reads and write DVD-RAM as well.

I’m considering getting an LG drive. Does any one know if Lite-on has one of these devices?

I know the Lite-On SHM-165P6S and the SHM-165H6S both support reading/writing of DVDRAM.

The H6S model is the lightscribe variant which I have. With newest firmware this is a very reliable drive. Early firmwares were problematic but very stable now.

LG's are very good with RAM. I have an LG 4167B that I have used for this purpose on those few occasions when I needed it. I've only used these two drives for reading ram discs from my DVD set-top recorder. All formatting/writing is done with the recorder, so I'm a poor source of info for their writing capabilities. Never had issues with reading on either though.

    Thanks for your reply.

Here in CR they do not sell these models of Lite-on drives..

I will be getting an LG 4166B as the 4167B is not available either.

At least I found a veru good review of the 4166B in CDFreaks.

Thanks a lot for your coments.

I have heard very nice things about the LG 4166B. There is a forum regular <chas0039 if I recall correctly> that owns one. He lurks about at CDFreaks.com more than here. He would be an excellent source as I trust his opinions without question. You might try pm'ing him. Good luck.
