stb, dvd/vcr rec, tv connection

Hello, i have just bought a dvd/vcr rec combo and have connected with a stb. On av1 i get the stb, on av2 i get vcr/dvd playback. When i try to tape on av1 and also push input(av) on my dvd/vdr, i would assume to get the pic showing from the stb but i just get black.

I know it is a connection prob. it says check connection no live pics.

I have ryw cords from stb to side panel of tv(the input holes) (sorry, not tekkie).
The ryw from back of dvd/vcr, rw out audio, yellow underneath doesn't say what but is in the out line...connecting to back of tv is yellow in video red white in audio.

Can anyone give me some ideas or things to try. I feel like i have tried every combo, been at it for more hours than i care to tell you about.
