Anyone out there that can comment/help on this set up: RG6 from the wall outlet-standard/basic cable service (after three way splits to different rooms) without a STB.
Assuming I use a 5-1000mhz splitter, one leg (RG6) going to DTV coax input on HDTV (720p/1080i) and one leg (RG6) going to coax input on VCR/DVD combo that has an analog tuner (older unit before manufacturers dropped tuners).

Assuming I use componet connections from back of VCR/DVD combo unit to component input on HDTV - would provide best available picture from standard DVDs in 480p ?

Assuming I use composite connections from back of VCR/DVD combo unit to AV1 (or AV2) composite input on HDTV,
this should allow me to continue to be able to use VCR as a recording device with its analog tuner and still be able to independently watch any station analog and/or digital on the HDTV, right?

Before I hook this up as described, I need to point out that I first ran a straight RG6 from the cable wall outlet to the DTV coal input on the HDTV. This allowed me to scan and find 70 analog and 40 digital stations. Very pleased as the local broadcast stations are received in both analog and HD. Would much rather watch football in HD.

Here's the problem, I first used a Radio Shack "recommended" splitter primarily intended for Satellite (20 - 2000+ mhz) and when hooking up as described, the HDTV scan showed 70 analog and 36 digital stations. It dropped a couple of the local broadcast HD stations.
I've now been advised that a 5-1000 mhz cable would work fine for cable use.

Any comments, please that woluld get me back to the 40 digital stations ? Being on a tight budget, you can spare the DVR recommendations. Thanks.
