    Hello,

I use my hauppauge wintv pvr250 mainly to dub vhs tapes. I would like to use it to record live shows off the air more often. However I don't like to leave my computer on all night to record shows while I'm not at the pc.

My question is, Will the recording software wake up the computer to record a show if it is left in standby mode????

    Thanks...

keep searching, I think I saw a post that explained how to do it with the scheduled task app on your PC. I wish that I could help more but I don't search well(I get distracted too easy)
IS IT SUPPOSED TO SMOKE LIKE THAT?

    Here's one possibility: http://www.tomdownload.com/utilities/system_utilities/pc_wakeup.htm

I just did a Google search of "software wakeup programs"

There are probably more out there. I suppose part of it depends on your motherboard and what options are available for wakeup.

    Hello,

    Thanks guys!

I'll check out the links and hunt a little more.

What it'd be great is if I could program the computer to act exactly like a vcr. I would like it to wake up from standby mode, record, then go back into standby mode. I'll check the stuff out.

I tried it on WinTV 2000 but failed to go on standy mode. Hauppauge tech support told me this card doesn't support ACPI. I posted the same question on this forum and SHS told me to go here

I tried until I gave up on the WinTV card. Now, I use compro videomate and showshifter. I can schedule program recording for months. The video is encoded in DIVX format. That is why I am thinking of PVR250 or 250 to can do MPEG2.

  9. Is there ANY TV capture card out there that supports standby mode (both wake and sleep)?

Yes. I am using Compro VideoMate TV Gold+. But instead of using the bundled woftware, I use Showshifter instead.

I program Showshifter to record daily or weekly program. Let the PC go on standby mode. It will wake-up and record the schedule program and go on standby once it's done.

    Please take a look here.

    BUMP!!

I know this may seem odd bumping a two year old thread but I found a great program:

    http://www.gonnasoft.com/System-Utilities/Other/WakeupOnStandBy-35502.html

I just tested it and it worked perfectly!

I set the timer to wake up the computer a minute or so before my program started. I set the recording timer program on my fusion hdtv program. I closed the recorder and loaded the wake up on standby program. I set it to wake up two minutes before my test time. Then I set it to go into sleep mode five minutes after my recording.

I just checked and it worked perfectly! The standby program wokeup the computer and my recording software started properly. Then after it recorded the computer went back into standby mode. This is great!

Now I can program my computer to work just like a vcr. I can record Star Trek DS9 during the week while I'm at work but not have to leave the computer on all day. I can have it stay in standby mode and wake up to record for two hours and then go back in to sleep mode. And of course I can leave my monitor off to save more power

This is a great little freeware app. Very much recommended.

I think it's OK to bump a 2 year old thread. You waited more that the minimum 'one or two days'.
At least you found something that works for you. Good news.

When I find a good freeware program, I always send a 'Thank You' note to the authors. We always need to encourage freeware authors. I find they really appreciate the positive feedback, also.

I too would like to give this old idea a go. But, I was thinking of using
it (in addition to my ADS DVD Xpress) with my ADVC-100 dv capture hardware.
I'm not sure of the setups involved with this.

(I too, want to do my DS9 and ST-TNG, as they both seem to show back-to-back
w/ 2-part'ers, and I keep missing them (2-parter's) cause of my requirements
for 1-hour recording - looking for max quality, you know)

Has anyone tried this with a DV device, and if so, are there *other* apps
involved that I need to research and D/L in the mean time ??

Thanks Yoda, for keeping up with this old idea and bringing it back to life
again -- I think the force is surely with you, hehe

  15. If you're willing to change your PVR program (I know that's a big deal for many) gbpvr (www.gbpvr.com) supports wakeup from hibernation automatically. You can set the program to wakeup from hibernation, record a show and go back to hibernation mode automatically, so long as your MB supports ACPI and wakeup via RTC. I am guessing that once you set the option, gbpvr writes an alarm time to the RTC. When the RTC wakes up the machine from hibernation, the gbpvr recording service which is polling the clock all the time to see if it needs to do anything, sees that it's time to do something - like start a recording.

Then at the end of the recording, it invokes a Windows service to hibernate.

This utility came 1 year too late. I have since dump the PVR and switch LG DVD recorder. Never miss a show.

I've never been able to understand what peoples problem is with leaving a computer on. My daughters machine is never switched off, mine gets switched off very occasionally (last time now was about 2 weeks ago). Daughters machine blanks the monitor after 20 minutes, mine never does but I switch the monitor off if I am not using it. Virus scans and other maintenance can then be left to run at a time that isn't going to get in the way of me using the machine.

Apart from anything else, if something is going to fail, it usually fails when you first switch it on. Never switching it off stops that from happening and actually increases the life of the machine.

I want to put it in standby to save power. I leave the monitor off and I want it to go into standby to do low power consumption.

Now with this program I can leave the computer essentially off except for the time I need it to record, then it can go back into low power mode.
